Many Catholics were heartened by news reports that the new president of Notre Dame, Fr. John Jenkins, was going to prohibit performances of The Vagina Monologues at the university. I was on board, devoting a column a few weeks ago to a New York Timess story in mid March about Jenkinss willingness to take on the trendy secular leftists in regard to this play. |

**They take pride in the secularization that has taken place.**
I guess we all need to keep praying for Notre Dame.
Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us!
"My understanding, after having listened to Fr Jenkins address us at the Alumni Senate last week, is that his point is not to ban but to decipher the sponsor. The play can be performed on campus, however, it is not a University supported event. The students/faculty/etc who chose to sponsor the event must raise the money, pay for the advertising, etc. as well as, and this is the part I like, engage in multi-disciplinary discussion regarding issues (public, open forum & faculty led events). Fabulous. I am not such a prude as to pretend the issues of sex and violence are too taboo to discuss in a Catholic university setting. I am such a prude as to make the personal decision not to see the play."

We visited Notre Dame last fall on a game day Saturday. Quite a few of the students and fans were behaving badly (as expected) but the thing that annoyed us the most was a visit to the school book store. We had a cart full of items and we were on our way to check out when we past a display that had a stack of "The DaVinci Code" books. We stopped, searched the book store until we found a couple "DaVinci Hoax" books, and put them on top of the "DaVinci Code" book display. Then we abandoned our full cart of sweaters, t-shirts, books, etc. and left the store.
Bishop D'Arcy of South Bend diocese seems solid, he's on EWTN radio occasionally. I'm surprised he doesn't take a more active role.
Good for you! You'd be surprised at the number of "Catholic" bookstores I have seen, both here and in Europe, selling the "Da Vinci Code" and even featuring it in their windows with big displays. Pretty depressing.
