Workers repairing a sewage pipe in the old city of Jerusalem have discovered the biblical Pool of Siloam, a freshwater reservoir that was a major gathering place for ancient Jews making religious pilgrimages to the city and the reputed site where Jesus cured a man blind from birth, according to the Gospel of John.

The pool was fed by the now-famous Hezekiah's Tunnel and is "a much grander affair" than archaeologists previously believed, with three tiers of stone stairs allowing easy access to the water, according to Hershel Shanks, editor of Biblical Archeology Review, which reported the find yesterday.

"Scholars have said that there wasn't a Pool of Siloam and that John was using a religious conceit" to illustrate a point, said New Testament scholar James H. Charlesworth of the Princeton Theological Seminary. "Now, we have found the Pool of Siloam ... exactly where John said it was." A Gospel that was thought to be "pure theology is now shown to be grounded in history," he said.

The discovery puts a new spotlight on what is called the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, con't

Too bad there is no way to prove some of the more controversial stuff.

The Second Temple, built by Herod the Great in 20 B.C. Fragments of Corinthian columns, grape arbors and flowers carved in stone have recently been discovered in extensive archaeological excavations next to the Temple Mount, allowing an artist to suggest this reconstruction of the holy building, where tens of thousands would throng to worship at the major Jewish holidays and pilgrimage festivals.

John 9
Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

1As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"

3"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. 4As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

6Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. 7"Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.

8His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, "Isn't this the same man who used to sit and beg?" 9Some claimed that he was.

Others said, "No, he only looks like him."
But he himself insisted, "I am the man."

10"How then were your eyes opened?" they demanded.

11He replied, "The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see."

How is something provable, yet not believable? Doesn't proof show something as being unquestionable, undeniable?

People's world views are shaped by perception, sometimes more than reality.

They refuse to believe the data, basically, because it doesn't match their world view or their agenda. Happens all the time.

I've never needed archeological evidence of the truth in the Bible. Never the less it is a wonderful find.

What about the stuff that has no data, just word of mouth?

I have always believed the bible was history as well. Still, it is sweet when something like this is found because it's kind of in the faces of the scoffers.

A Gospel that was thought to be "pure theology is now shown to be grounded in history," he said.

This is a silly statement. Why would a geographical location have anything to do with the Gospel being grounded in history? Jerusalem, Gallilee, the Jordan river, etc.etc.etc. are mentioned in the Gospels as well. I assumed it was already grounded in history. lol
