The Second Temple, built by Herod the Great in 20 B.C. Fragments of Corinthian columns, grape arbors and flowers carved in stone have recently been discovered in extensive archaeological excavations next to the Temple Mount, allowing an artist to suggest this reconstruction of the holy building, where tens of thousands would throng to worship at the major Jewish holidays and pilgrimage festivals.
