American Girl alternative enjoys sales boost amidst boycott - "sales nearly triple"

American Girl alternative enjoys sales boost amidst boycott Jan 5, 2006 By Michael Foust Baptist Press

Sales up The Life of Faith book and doll series has seen a sales increase since a pro-life group called for a boycott of American Girl.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--A conservative-led boycott of the popular American Girl book and doll series during the Christmas season apparently led many parents to seek alternatives -- so much so that one Christian company saw its sales nearly triple in the final weeks of 2005.

The Life of Faith book and doll series -- sometimes called the Christian alternative to American Girl -- experienced a 172 percent increase in sales from the time the boycott began, says Sandi Shelton, president of Mission City Press, which owns the Life of Faith series.

The controversy over American Girl began in September when the company announced a partnership with Girls Inc., a nonprofit youth organization whose advocacy statement supports legalized abortion, contraceptive access and assistance for girls exploring their "sexual orientation." In addition to a $50,000 donation to Girls Inc., American Girl pledged to donate 70 cents from each sale of the $1 "I Can" bracelets to Girls Inc.

On Nov. 1 the Pro-Life Action League called for a boycott during the Christmas season. American Girl ended the partnership with Girls Inc. on Dec. 26, and the Pro-Life Action League claimed victory.

Shelton said her company received at least 3,000 phone calls, e-mails and letters from people who mentioned their concern over American Girl. And the phone calls haven't stopped with the passing of Christmas -- she's still receiving calls.

"We've had parents calling us and telling us that they are returning all their American Girl stuff back to American Girl -- just boxing them up and not worrying about a refund," Shelton said. "... We're talking serious anger on the part of many parents, and you can't blame them."

The Life of Faith book and doll line includes four characters -- Elsie, Millie, Violet and Laylie -- set in the 1800s. Each 200-plus page book chronicles the life and Christian walk of the character, and each character has a doll and accessories line. The primary goal of the Life of Faith series, Shelton said, is to disciple girls in their Christian faith.

Although the Life of Faith line is considered by some to be an alternative to American Girl, it didn't start out that way. At first, the Life of Faith line didn't even include dolls. The first book series, based on the Elsie Dinsmore books of the 1800s, launched in 1999. As it became more popular, Shelton said, girls began requesting that the company make dolls. The first doll line was released in 2002.

Because the books are written for an audience of around 10-14 years old, Shelton said the company decided the dolls “needed to be sophisticated enough that a 14-year-old girl would want that doll as much as an 8 or 10 year old [would].”

Even though they receive many comparisons, American Girl and Life of Faith have different missions, Shelton said.

"What our whole brand is about is mentoring these girls in their faith," she said. "It's not just a light, fluffy Christian book and doll line. It is a really powerful mentoring program. The books are packed with Scripture, and they really model how to live a life of faith every day when it's really hard.

"... Our mission is not about the product as much as it's about the mentoring of the girls' hearts."

Mission City Press recently launched curriculum for Life of Faith girls clubs. To date, there are nearly 200 such clubs nationwide, Shelton said.

"[The curriculum is] not just for mentoring girls that are already Christian, but it's a great outreach, because it uses these fictional characters to get into the hearts of girls." --30-- For more information about the Life of Faith series, visit www.aLifeofFaith.com or call 1-800-840-2641.

Does the “I Can” bracelet mean;

I Can have sex anytime I want.

I Can have sexually transmitted deceases.

I Can have a child out of wedlock and not know who the father might be.

I Can live in poverty because I have children out of wedlock.

I Can die a horrible death such as AIDS because I did all of the other things.

I know this is not a homeschooling issue, pre se, but since the vast majority of homeschoolers do it for religious reasons, I thought they might be interested in this article.

I meant to post an email I got, but must have deleted it. American Girl sent out an email stating that their affiliation with Girls, Inc. ended late in December. It stated they had planned on ending it at that time and they had no plans to affiliate themselves with any other company in the near future. I am just stating what they wrote.

They are beautiful and my girls will get them next Christmas.

(E-Bay has them cheaper as well)

Some company exec's are truly lefticidal. They'll take their company down the tubes in the belief that their leftist social philosophies outweigh market realities. And other companies then profit from them being stuck on stupid. Gotta love it!

I received a letter that stated pretty much the same thing...it was the second letter I received from American Girl. The first letter makes no mention of the planned termination in December of the I CAN program. Here's the letter:

Thank you for contafcting American Girl to share your thoughts about the 2005 "I CAN" program and partnership. We take all comments from our customers very seriously.

As originally planned, our "I CAN" program and 2005 partnership with Girls, Inc. officially ended on December 26, 2005 - when our website, catalogue, and retail stores shifted focus to our new 2006 products and programs.

We have no definite plans to continue this program in its current format, nor do we know if we will choose another benefit partner for a future campaign. However, we remain focused on our singular objective to help make a meaningful and positive difference in the lives of all young firls. This is - an always will be - our priority.

Again, we appreciate the time you took to let us know your thoughts on this program. We remain committed to creating high-quality, age-appropriate products and experience for girls.

This one is. We're homeschooling 8 and 10 year old girls, and I've been looking for an alternative to American Girl. Thanks so much!

Here's a link to their website.

"Sales have tripled." I'll bet that is not really true.

If you sell 2 dolls per month, and you sell 6 dolls the next month, you've tripled your sales. If you sold no dolls in December, and 1 doll in January, your sales are infinitely greater.

I looked at these alternative dolls, and I think they're ridiculous. What era do they historically represent? They're an obvious knock-off from AG (note that you can even buy a pet for your girl). I think AG has learned it's lesson.

Do we really want the world to think we are so thin-skinned and easily offended that the "I CAN" provocation lasts until the second-coming? Look at what the nut cases in the Arab world have done in response to the cartoons printed in Norway. They're raiding EU offices in Gaza, shutting down embassies. My goodness. Because a Norwegian paper dared to print a depiction of the prophet.

Why don't we let the Muslims keep their monopoly on hysteria?
