Mormon missionary shot and killed in Chesapeake, Virginia
The Virginian Pilot ^ | 1/2/2005 | Jim Washington

Posted on 01/02/2006 7:39:23 PM PST by gregwest

CHESAPEAKE - A 21-year-old Mormon missionary died Monday night after he and his partner were shot while going door-to-door in the Deep Creek area.

The other missionary, age 19, was in serious condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Monday night, Chesapeake police said.

Police did not release the victims’ identities.

According to police the two missionaries were walking in the 2600 block of Elkhart Street off George Washington Highway about 6 p.m. when they were approached by another man. The man shot them both and fled on foot.

One of the victims ran to The Charity House, a nearby nursing home, to seek help.

Police described the suspect as a black male, about 5’10’’ wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and jeans. He was last seen heading toward Janice Lynn Court, which backs up to Elkhart.

The two missionaries had bicycles, but were not riding them at the time.

A group from the Mormon church, known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, waited in the consultation room at the Norfolk General emergency room Monday night. They declined to comment.

According to the church’s official web site there are more than 60,000 Mormon missionaries, mostly young men and women who volunteer to spread the church’s message for one and a half to two years all over the world, at their own expense.

There are apartment buildings at the end of Elkhart Street, and some residents could not leave or return to their homes for a time Monday night.

Police, working in a moderate rain, had the street blocked off a short way off George Washington Highway.

“This is close to home,’’ said resident Bobby Gatling. He has lived on the block for two years. “Nothing like this has ever happened here before.’’

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

Please don't attack the others on the thread or call into question their devotion to their religions.

The vast majority here are great people.

As a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, "Mormons" I ONLY taught that we are Saved through Grace alone. Only through the Grace of God are we saved. THAT is Mormon theology. Just as the Bible teaches us however, Faith without works is dead. Please learn from the source, not someone who "thinks" they know.

Nothing you quoted is Church doctrine or Canon. Those are beliefs held within and among members of teh Church, which beliefs difer as much as my Fathers Southern Baptist congregation beliefs' differed among each other.

Your friend is wrong.

Doll, I'm a girl. And I'M not judging Mormons. They are already judged by the plain text of the Bible. And, if you knew the Bible, you'd know that St. Paul said that we who are Christians have no right to "judge those on the outside" but of those who are on the inside, or those who claim to be Christians, we are the judges.........-- I just wanted to point out that their mission into the apartment houses of suburban Virginia was not really a wholesome or holy endeavor, despite all appearances. .......and every day I come woefully short. My discussion on Mormonism isn't anything I'll regret in His sight, however.

I meant brother as in "brother in Christ".. ok..sister.

as for the planets, wives, white underwear and all..... you are right. It sounds strange, however if it's the Lords way of bringing people to him.... I don't know, maybe you do.

Well if you're good in "His sight", and you know that, well then by all means, correct those evil Mormons..... don't "share your bread" with them, and lead them in the right direction.

Was wondering how Catholics fall out in the scheme of things?... Since you know the one true way, I just wanted to check out my odds.

My wife says that Presbyterians will go to heaven, I tell her she's going to hell with the kids, but I'm good to go as a Catholic. Any thoughts? ..... I'm pulling for the Catholics cause my mom and dad told me that was the way to go.

I doubt there is anything you think you know that I don't. Moreover most of what is reported from Mormon Theoldy or doctrine is most often individual belief and speculation. Even from Joseh Smith and Brigham Young.

Reminds me of a Virginia story - a girl I knew in Charlottesville was convinced someone was stalking her - this was the early 80s. She had recently moved from Richmond where she'd seen two men wearing white shirts, black ties, riding a bicycle frequently in her neighborhood. Apparently there were two of similar build in her Charlottesville neighborhood as well. We had to reassure her that was the way all Mormon missionaries looked...

"..and you think that this type of post under an article descirbing the murder of a mormon will draw people to Christianity how? You my friend, seem awfully confused. I don't remember Christ showing the insensitivity that you are showing"...

Wow. None of us know these guys but I have done what I should have done and prayed for them. Sorry if putting their "missionary work" in Biblical and historical perspective ruffles feathers but that's what FR is about. Most Mormon missionaries emphasize their "sincerity" but people who were on the Titanic were also sincere in their beliefs that it would not sink.

And as for "drawing people to Christ", I'm sure all Jesus cares about with the boy who died and the one who is wounded is asking them to believe in Him only -- repent and be forgiven. Same way He spoke to the thief on the cross who went to be with Him that day in Paradise.

I'm not being "insensitive" by discussing these boys and their ultimate damnation or salvation based on their beliefs in a Freeper thread that they have no immediate possibility of reading. I'm just Freeping.

Catholics -- see my tagline -- of course are Christians. There is nothing in their doctrine that says, for instance, that Jesus was Satan's brother, etc. However, as I was raised Episcopalian, I sure do have some trouble with their new doctrine towards gays in the pulpit. More devilish than bigamists in the pulpit.

Well, I'd love to take you out to coffee if you get to LA and take you through your own Book of Mormon. Until then, just answer me this one thing:

How come God spoke to Joseph Smith in 1840 (or whatever year Joseph Smith got the special magical glasses that allowed him to read the Egyptian hieroglyphics that translated into the Book of Mormon) -- how come "God" spoke in the 19th century to Smith in King James (i.e. 12th Century) English?

That was the biggest giveaway to me when I was a teen that Smith was smoking a lot of pixie dust after his Masonic meetings.

Sick. This is totally bass-ackwards. If you all are so confused about what LDS (Mormons) believe, why don't you try THE WEBSITE.

www.lds.org
www.mormon.org
www.josephsmith.net

Isn't any harder than that. What it says there is what the LDS members in general believe. Individuals with delusions of grandeur may tell you otherwise, but if you honestly wonder what they teach on Sunday, just look at the official site. End of story.

And you certainly don't see myself, or most others, poking fun at, oh, the Pope, or any other religious leader. I am not Catholic, yet I hold the Pope in the most high regard, and would consider his words as wise and most certainly guided by heaven. Is it so hard to do the same for Joseph Smith and the LDS church, or even just lay off the insults a bit?

For the record, the LDS church is not based off of works *or* faith alone. They believe it takes both. Is that so unthinkable? So wrong that we need to discuss it here? God forbid they believe in Christ, and actually what to DO something about it.

Nice work, guys - taking the death of a young man, doing what he can do - at least in his eyes - to HELP OTHER PEOPLE, and making it a bashing festival. What class.

Yeah, this is my first post, too. Been a lurker for a long time, but this kind of crap pisses me off.

What has happened to this place, that a thread about the murder of a young man is immediately seen as a good excuse for attacking his religion?
