Presiding Bishop to Attend ARCIC Launch [ECUSA]

Presiding Bishop Frank T. Griswold has confirmed that he will be among the international delegation present in Seattle, Wash., on May 16 for the release of a joint statement of understanding on the place of Mary in the doctrine and life of the Church.

The document, “Mary: Grace and Hope in Christ,” draws together five years of work by the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC), a dialogue officially sponsored by the Anglican Consultative Council and by the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.

After months of public ecumenical consultations and unpublicized intrigue after the 2003 General Convention, Bishop Griswold resigned as ARCIC co-chair on Nov. 29, 2003. In issuing the invitation for Bishop Griswold to attend, a spokesperson for Seattle Archbishop and ARCIC co-chair Alexander J. Brunett said Bishop Griswold’s contribution to “this important aspect of Christian faith” was “substantial” and therefore his presence seemed appropriate.

Neither Lambeth Palace nor the Anglican Communion Office (the executive office of the ACC) were aware of the invitation, or of Bishop Griswold’s intention to attend the launch.

The Rev. Canon Gregory Cameron, deputy secretary general of the ACC and director of Ecumenical Affairs at the Anglican Communion Office, said the official delegation from the Anglican Communion consisted of himself in his capacity as co-secretary, and the retired Australian Primate, Archbishop Peter Carnley, who replaced Bishop Griswold as the Anglican co-chair to ARCIC.

I wait with bated breath the comments of the Romans on this lovely development.

Dear Kolokotronis,

The only comment I can muster is one of complete and total uninterest.

I don't think it's fair to say or think that Grizzie represents world Anglicanism to any significant degree, so I really coudn't care less if he wants to crash the party.

Well, I guess that lets us know where you stand on the Archbishop of Seattle inviting Griswold to the "launch" of a theological document with the names of, I assume, Roman hierarchs and theologians on it. Thanks.

LOL! Considering the fact that it was Cardinal Ratzinger who said "no talks with Anglicans if Griswold is there," I suspect the response will be interesting.

Yup! That's why I pinged a few Romans who seem to be "in the know"! :)

Ah, but that's where you're wrong. The Catholics cited Griswold's presence as The Reason why they're not ready to continue ecumenical talks with the Anglican Communion.

Surely you are not surprised that it would be I who would spell it correctly? :) (Given my execrable spelling ability and complete inability to use the "spell button")

Dear r9etb,

Hmmm... I misread the article. I didn't realize that the Archdiocese of Seattle had invited him. I thought he was "gate crashing."

Well, that's for Pope Benedict to worry about.

"Well, that's for Pope Benedict to worry about."

Part of me was afraid you'd say that, while the other part is surprised. Is this what centuries of letting the hierarchy and specifically the Pope decide everything leads to? You ought to be screaming about this. We would, even if it were likely it wouldn't do any good. I can tell you one thing, from this single "Orthodoxer's" pov, the input of a heresiarch like Griswold in any theological document would mean there is only one proper place for it, the fireplace.

This Anglican takes a very similar view (the reason I posted the article), with the caveat that it might be possible for him to get it right once -- even a slow clock is right once in a while.

I wonder where they will do this in Seattle. Probably St. Mark's Cathedral. This picture doesn't do it justice -- it looks like a cold, concrete tomb, inside and out (though it has marvelous acoustics for a solo bagpipe; I piped there once).

Ironic that it is on "Cap Hill" -- the gay district. ("What do you call a straight couple on Cap Hill? Tourists.")

I am just curious about the content of the document. Over a decade ago the Lutheran-Catholic dialog produced a fine (and thick) volume "Jesus, Mary, and the Saints" which mutually affirmed many Marian dogmas; yet could only "agree to disagree" over petitioning the intercession of the Saints.

I guess we'll have to wait for its release to know its content...

Dear Kolokotronis,

Thank you for your kind comments.

However, as I'm up to my eyebrows in alligators right now with actual, real work, and had just popped in for a quick view, I think I'll stick with my assessment, at least until I actually have time to actually think about it.

Perhaps, when I get up for air, I might actually have the time or luxury to sort it all out.

OK I haven't had time to read the thread but I have to laugh at your comment, "You ought to be screaming about this" and then the ping to me. I must be a screamer in your estimate = D! I'll read it tomorrow and probably come back screaming. But you know, I'm kind of hoarse, so much to scream about in these troubling times. ;-)

I would reply, however, the document was formulated so as to deny input from the Roman Rite faithful raised to believe a non-Catholic must accept the Sacred Dogma of His Church before they could sit at a table and write a declaration which would dare attempt to nulify/compromise the bedrock beliefs of The One True Faith.

As of now I take very strong exception to the heartless utilization of a meaningless marketing term employed by these supposed men of God. The 'launch' of a document having as its subject the Blessed Virgin Mary - Holy Mother of God - is a crass secular insult to her holy name and the reverence she has among the faithful of the One True Church. May God forgive their narcissistic and insensitive arrogance.
