"I can tell you one thing, from this single "Orthodoxer's" pov, the input of a heresiarch like Griswold in any theological document would mean there is only one proper place for it, the fireplace."

Can't argue with that! Although inserting sideways at high velocity into a certain part of Griswold's anatomy might also have some appeal. ;)

The RC Archbishop of Seattle, if I'm thinking of the right guy, shocked and disgusted Catholics across America when he got elected head of the US Council of Catholic Bishops. His diocese is notorious for heresy, and the most financially devestated from sex-abuse payouts. But it's not all the current bishop's fault:

Archbishop Hunthausen was formally found to be a heretic. A "coadjutor bishop," Thomas Murphy, took over running the diocese, until Hunthausen retired while still very healthy several years before normal retirement age.

Joseph Brunett was consercrated by notorious San Francisco Archbishop William Levada.

For clarity: Brunett is the current Archbishop of Seattle. Hunthausen was penalized in 1986, and retired in 1990

Thanks for your observations. I suppose we'll just have to wait to see what this commission comes up with. It is of concern to some of us Orthodox in that, as you certainly know, our Marian theology, patristic in nature and unchanging, was and is highly developed. If the statement merely outlines areas of agreement and disagreement, I suppose that's of little harm and may do some good, but commissions which seek to do more than that with theologians outside The Church, whose hierarchs are arguably not in the Apostolic Succession and many of whom are clearly in communion with other hierarchs who are arguably heretics in some very basic ways, like Griswold, is in my opinion, a dangerous pursuit born more of a "unity above all else" mentality than of a faithfulness to the established doctrines of The Church. The fact that the likes of a Griswold, a man in whose cathedral in NY a "Christa" was hung, whose fellow Episcopalian bishops, at least a majority of them, were unwilling to reaffirm the basic dogmas of the 7 Councils, is invited because of his input into this process gives me a very bad feeling.
