Prayer for the Election of a Pope - Lord God, you are our eternal shepherd and guide. In your mercy grant your Church a shepherd who will walk in your ways and whose watchful care will bring us your blessing. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Collect, Mass for the Election of a Pope, Roman Missal)

It worked.
Well, after the first few puffs.

No Clinton quotes allowed on this thread. Besides, he didn't inhale.

Yes, but what better way to run into the priests, religious, and bishops here in America that really most need a talking to?

I was wondering - do you have a sense of peace about the process and the coming Pope or a sense of apprehension. I have to admit that my sense (as a non-Catholic) is somewhat of apprehension. Our world is such desperate shape.

I'm a little bit to the side of apprehension, just barely. There is some trust too -- I guess I need to pray more.

The next pope is supposedly one that will signal misfortunes for the world.

This one will try to put all things in order -- much as John Paul II was doing.

For what it's worth, I feel at peace because the Cardinals have taken their responsibility seriously and devoutly, and God is in control.

The world is in nasty shape.

But we are still in the hands of a God who loves us and calls us home. We may not get to get home the way we want, we may find ourselves being asked to stand up for the truth when it's hard, we may have crosses to bear, but God loves us. He is more faithful than we can ever be.

From the Time interview in 1989:
Time: Friends of yours say that you are disappointed that your work has not brought more conversions in this great Hindu nation. vMother Teresa: Missionaries don't think of that. They only want to proclaim the Word of God. Numbers have nothing to do with it. But the people are putting prayer into action by coming and serving the people. Continually people are coming to feed and serve, so many, you go and see. Everywhere people are helping. We don't know the future. But the door is already open to Christ. There may not be a big conversion like that, but we don't know what is happening in the soul.

Time: What do you think of Hinduism?

Mother Teresa: I love all religions, but I am in love with my own. No discussion. That's what we have to prove to them. Seeing what I do, they realize that I am in love with Jesus.

Time: And they should love Jesus too?

Mother Teresa: Naturally, if they want peace, if they want joy, let them find Jesus. If people become better Hindus, better Moslems, better Buddhists by our acts of love, then there is something else growing there. They come closer and closer to God. When they come closer, they have to choose.

This certainly gives a bit of a different picture than just "We are to help Buddhists be good Buddhists, to help Jews be good Jews, to help Muslims be good Muslims."

Thanks for the responses. I share the apprehension for the condition of the world - but I do see God's hand at work in this process and in the life of the Church throughout the world.

I just cannot shake that with the passing of the wonderful Pope John Paul II, we have seen the passing of the world into it's final death throes before the Lord Jesus returns to claim this world for Himself. Truly a unique servant of God is needed to lead the Catholic church and to be God's great Shepherd of the Church during this time of danger.

"There is only one God and He is God to all; therefore it is important that everyone is seen as equal before God. I’ve always said we should help a Hindu become a better Hindu, a Muslim become a better Muslim, a Catholic become a better Catholic. We believe our work should be our example to people. We have among us 475 souls - 30 families are Catholics and the rest are all Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs—all different religions. But they all come to our prayers." Source.

And do you believe Time Magazine?

LOL!

(One of those places I would not want to get my theology!

Our priest talked about this last Sunday in references to hearing the TRUE voice of the TRUE shepherd, Jesus Christ.

Just because Time Magazine might publish a story about Catholics -- it needs to be viewed with skepticism.

So where do we look for the truth?

The Bible
The Cathechism of the Catholic Church
Homilies (if you have an orthodox priest)
EWTN

Actually, we have a pretty good source right here on FR in this Religion Forum also.

Yes, but she explains in my quote that she means "Catholic" by "better Muslim," etc. We might perhaps cite by way of analogy the principle of St. Augustine:
Accordingly, any one whom they have associated with themselves is united to the Church in all those points in which they are not separated from it. And therefore, if he wish to come over to the Church, he is made sound in those points in which he was unsound and went astray; but where he was sound in union with the Church, he is not cured, but recognized,--lest in desiring to cure what is sound we should rather inflict a wound. (On Baptism, Against the Donatists, 8:10)

Thanks for posting this. As Mother Teresa says, "They come closer and closer to God. When they come closer, they have to choose."

Having an Irish pope would be cool! In the footsteps of St. Paddy.
