'If they ain't no smoke, then we ain't spoke..."
Someone just emailed me this..Imagine if the new Pope comes out on the balcony, gives his blessing, and in the new era of vatican openness, a reporter asks him.."Father, you've just been elected Pope, what are your going to do now?"..and the Pope replies..."I'm going to Disneyworld"
>> So you wouldn't go for an Irish Pope, eh? <<
Lemme think: Mahony, O'Malley, ... Hell no!
Right.
Still have to wonder why those particular onlookers bothered to show up.
Black smoke billowed from the chimney above the Sistine Chapel just after 1 p.m. CDT Monday, signifying that cardinals had taken a first vote on a new pope.
The black smoke means no candidate received the two-thirds majority required for election. The 115 cardinals who will elect the next pope began their secret session earlier Monday in the Sistine Chapel.
The cardinals chanted the Litany of the Saints during a solemn procession from the Apostolic Palace to the chapel earlier Monday.
One of the likely candidates to become the next pope led Mass at the Vatican Monday and asked God for a new leader "who guides us to knowledge in Christ." In his homily, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger cautioned against turning from religious truths.
One French cardinal says he slept well Sunday night, and his "ideas are clear."
Heading into the morning Mass that preceded the start of the conclave, the cardinal said he understands the seriousness of the task ahead and that now, "the Holy Spirit will do the rest."
Thousands of pilgrims and tourists converged on St. Peter's Square to watch the chapel chimney for the white smoke that will tell the world the church's 265th pontiff has been elected.
At least 77 votes, from two-thirds of the 115 voting cardinals, are needed to elect a pontiff during initial balloting, but under rules updated in 1996 by the late Pope John Paul II, it could shrink to a simple majority after 30 votes have been taken.
More than half of the voting cardinals are from Europe, 20 are from Latin America and eleven are from the United States.
I understand your concern though.
Agreed.
>>>>>> You go with Mother Teresa if you want, when what they say conflicts, I'll go with Our Lord.
You are right, if there is indeed a conflict. And for some folks, I think you are right about indifferentism. But I don't think you're right about Mother Teresa. For her, I think it was a matter of different tactics reaching the same end. Certainly, she saw herself as a missionary, and she was responsible for many conversions.
As I said, personal experience helped bring me to this position. Having been targeted for "missionary outreach" by fundamentalists on several occasions, I came away unimpressed, to say the least.
If there's white smoke - here comes the Pope!
You respect someone's dignity when you tell them the truth. True charity desires the salvation of men, true charity speaks the truth and corrects error.
Be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God hath raised from the dead, even by him this man standeth here before you whole. This is the stone which was rejected by you the builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other. For there is no other name under heaven given to men, whereby we must be saved. Acts of the Apostles 4:10-12
Is there some sort of "schedule" we can be looking for? I heard they vote four times tomorrow........so is there a certain time we should be listening?
Does anyone have the URL to the CBS cam that was posted so ways back in the thread? The link on thier website doesn't actually open anything other than a playlist. I clicked on one here earlier that was a nice close-up of the chimney.
Wow, lots of typos in my last post. Please excuse them.
I thought they were voting two times, Noon and 7pm Rome time. They probably meet more than twice.
I don't know for a fact that that is an accurate quote of Mother Teresa's, from what I understand, it has been disputed. It was posted here by someone else.
Didn't miss much. No pope today.
Oh I know, but it just would have been cool to see the smoke, you know? No matter, I'll try and catch it tomorrow.
I am sure they will show the smoke a gazillion times on cable news...so have at it.
They keep showing it every 5 minutes on FNC.
What about Cormac?
