Psalm: Wednesday 26 Reading I Responsorial Psalm Gospel

Reading I
1 Kgs 18:20-39

Ahab sent to all the children of Israel
and had the prophets assemble on Mount Carmel.

Elijah appealed to all the people and said,
"How long will you straddle the issue?
If the LORD is God, follow him; if Baal, follow him."
The people, however, did not answer him.
So Elijah said to the people,
"I am the only surviving prophet of the LORD,
and there are four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal.
Give us two young bulls.
Let them choose one, cut it into pieces, and place it on the wood,
but start no fire.
I shall prepare the other and place it on the wood,
but shall start no fire.
You shall call on your gods, and I will call on the LORD.
The God who answers with fire is God."
All the people answered, "Agreed!"

Elijah then said to the prophets of Baal,
"Choose one young bull and prepare it first,
for there are more of you.
Call upon your gods, but do not start the fire."
Taking the young bull that was turned over to them, they prepared it
and called on Baal from morning to noon, saying,
"Answer us, Baal!"
But there was no sound, and no one answering.
And they hopped around the altar they had prepared.
When it was noon, Elijah taunted them:
"Call louder, for he is a god and may be meditating,
or may have retired, or may be on a journey.
Perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened."
They called out louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears,
as was their custom, until blood gushed over them.
Noon passed and they remained in a prophetic state
until the time for offering sacrifice.
But there was not a sound;
no one answered, and no one was listening.

Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come here to me."
When the people had done so, he repaired the altar of the LORD
that had been destroyed.
He took twelve stones, for the number of tribes of the sons of Jacob,
to whom the LORD had said, "Your name shall be Israel."
He built an altar in honor of the LORD with the stones,
and made a trench around the altar
large enough for two measures of grain.
When he had arranged the wood,
he cut up the young bull and laid it on the wood.
"Fill four jars with water," he said,
"and pour it over the burnt offering and over the wood."
"Do it again," he said, and they did it again.
"Do it a third time," he said,
and they did it a third time.
The water flowed around the altar,
and the trench was filled with the water.

At the time for offering sacrifice,
the prophet Elijah came forward and said,
"LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,
let it be known this day that you are God in Israel
and that I am your servant
and have done all these things by your command.
Answer me, LORD!
Answer me, that this people may know that you, LORD, are God
and that you have brought them back to their senses."
The LORD's fire came down
and consumed the burnt offering, wood, stones, and dust,
and it lapped up the water in the trench.
Seeing this, all the people fell prostrate and said,
"The LORD is God! The LORD is God!"

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 16:1b-2ab, 4, 5ab and 8, 11

R (1b) Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.
Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;
I say to the LORD, "My Lord are you."
R Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.
They multiply their sorrows
who court other gods.
Blood libations to them I will not pour out,
nor will I take their names upon my lips.
R Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.
O LORD, my allotted portion and cup,
you it is who hold fast my lot.
I set the LORD ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
R Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.
You will show me the path to life,
fullness of joys in your presence,
the delights at your right hand forever.
R Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

Gospel
Mt 5:17-19

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.
I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.
Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,
not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter
will pass from the law,
until all things have taken place.
Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments
and teaches others to do so
will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven.
But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments
will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven."

Wednesday June 9, 2004   Tenth Week in Ordinary Time

Reading (1 Kings 18:20-39)   Gospel (St. Matthew 5:17-19)

Our Lord tells us in the Gospel reading today that He has come not to abolish the law and the prophets but to fulfill them. And He tells us very clearly that not even the smallest part of a letter is going to pass away. In other words, that would be like saying that not even the dot over the “i” is going to pass away before it is all fulfilled. The reason is because it is all the Word of God, it is all inspired, and it is all true; and because it is true, it will be fulfilled to every last little detail. That is the point Our Lord wants us to understand.

Now part of the fulfillment of all this is what the prophets teach us. We can look, for instance, at the time of the prophet Elijah. At that time, the people for the most part had apostasized from God. They were following Baal and they were following all kinds of other false gods. And so Elijah is saying to them, “Make a choice. If the Lord is God, follow Him. If Baal is god, follow him. Which is it going to be?” And, boy, if they were not just like 21st century Americans: they stood there silent because they wanted to hedge their bets. They did not want to make a choice and they did not want to follow anyone. They wanted to try to do both. “Maybe it’s this one or maybe it’s that one, so we’re going to play all the games just in case.” That would be like saying, “I don’t know if Satan is god or if God is God, so I’ll worship both of them and I’ll see which one is going to do what I want them to do.”

Well, we are not stupid enough not to know that Satan is going to give us what we want – not what we need – but he is going to give us what we want. God, on the other hand, is going to test our faith. He will provide everything we need, He will answer all our prayers, but not in the way that we necessarily think they should be answered and not in the time we think they should be answered. He is simply going to ask, “Do you believe?” Not with all kinds of extraordinary signs and so on because that just passes away. God could work some extraordinary miracle today and by next week we will have forgotten that it even happened and we would be right back to our old way of life. That stuff is a flash in the pan. God wants faith, deep faith.

That is exactly what is going to be necessary. At the time of the prophet Elijah, there had been three years without a drop of rain. So there was a drought, there were no crops, there was no water for the people to drink, and still they refused to believe in God. Of course, what they would do was to curse God because He was not doing things the way they thought it should be done. Rather than having faith in God, they turned against Him. And they used that drought as the rationalization for why they should turn against Him: “After all, if He’s God and He loves us, He shouldn’t be doing this to us! Therefore, He must not love us or He’s not powerful enough or He just simply doesn’t exist.” Well, things have not changed. Human nature has not changed. When things do not go our way, we begin to get angry with God, we doubt, we question; sometimes we even curse God because He is not doing things the way that we (who think that we are God) think He ought to do it. Therefore, we start to slip away.

When we see this, we have to recognize that our faith is very weak, very weak. It is precisely in these ways that God is going to strengthen it. If we can continue to pray through the midst of the difficulties, if we can remain faithful in the midst of it, we will grow in that faith. We will become more virtuous and we will see that God will indeed answer all our prayers, but in a way that we could never have even dreamed of and in a time that is truly right. Not necessarily, again, in our time (that is, in the time that we thought they should be answered) but in a time that is the best. This is very, very difficult. But the time that we are going into is going to be just like the time of Elijah. There is going to be mass apostasy. People are falling away; they are doubting; they are doing all kinds of things that we know they should not be doing. Yet, as things continue to get worse, chances are that all of us are going to be tempted to do the same. Unless the faith is firmly established, and unless the prayer life is firmly established, we are going to waver – and we might fall.

As a word of warning: None of us can count on our own strength. It is a guarantee that if we try we will fall. There is no possible way that we are going to be able to do it alone. So if we are sitting here today saying, “Oh, I’ll be fine. I’ll be able to make it through whatever comes,” as a word of warning, you are hanging over the edge of a cliff if you have that attitude. The attitude that we have to have is “I know that I am weak, and I know that without God I can do nothing. Therefore, I need to pray and I need to be firmly rooted in prayer so that God will give me the strength to be able to do what needs to be done.” That is the only way. If we rely on ourselves, we are going to fall flat on our faces. If we rely on God, we are going to be fine.

The passionate and wayward youth was transformed into a humble and contrite monk, weeping day and night for his sins and entirely surrendered to God. Ephraim's earnest resolve pleased the Lord Who rewarded him with the gifts of wisdom; grace flowed from his mouth like a sweet stream, in fulfillment of his parents' dream.

Sing louder. Force the silent people to choose between hearing you and singing themselves.

I think there may something in the Geneva Conventions prohibiting this wantonly cruel behavior.

Actually, if I do have a "grump" near me or a little kid looking around with no idea what we are doing, I will sing "to" them and try to communicate a "smile" with my tone.

LOL! Or sing a little off key once in awhile so they will sing to drown you out!

Mass bump. Here is part of a speach,Address Before the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal in Lisbon
May 9, 1985 President Reagan
No one has done more to remind the world of the truth of human dignity, as well as the truth that peace and justice begins with each of us, than the special man who came to Portugal a few years ago after a terrible attempt on his life. He came here to Fatima, the site of your great religious shrine, to fulfill his special devotion to Mary, to plead for forgiveness and compassion among men, to pray for peace and the recognition of human dignity throughout the world.

When I met Pope John Paul II a year ago in Alaska, I thanked him for his life and his apostolate. And I dared to suggest to him the example of men like himself and in the prayers of simple people everywhere, simple people like the children of Fatima, there resides more power than in all the great armies and statesmen of the world.

This, too, is something the Portugese can teach the world. For your nation's greatness, like that of any nation, is found in your people. It can be seen in their daily lives, in their communities and towns, and especially in those simple churches that dot your countryside and speak of a faith that justifies all of humanity's claims to dignity, to freedom.

I would suggest to you that here is power, here is the final realization of life's meaning and history's purpose, and here is the foundation for a revolutionary idea -- the idea that human beings have a right to determine their own destiny.

I hope you'll forgive me if I leave you with one story about our early days as a democracy. At a critical moment in our history when disunity and discord prevailed on every side, a man celebrated as an inventor and scientist interrupted the proceedings of the Constitutional Convention, trying at the time to formulate the Constitution of the United States. It was Benjamin Franklin who rose to say to his fellow delegates that he had lived a long time and that he had learned above all that not the smallest bird falls from the heavens without the knowledge of God. It is said that he then knelt and asked the delegates to kneel with him and seek a guidance greater than their own. And from then on, every constitutional meeting opened with prayer.

A great democracy was born after those words, just as a great democracy was born in Portugal. It was born because the Portuguese are a people who love freedom and peace, who are willing to sacrifice for a better life for their children. But most of all it was born because the Portuguese are unafraid to acknowledge a higher law that operates in the affairs of mankind, that higher law dictates human freedom and dignity.

There is a word in your language I remember using in a speech during my first year in office, a very useful word evoking the remembrance of things past -- I hope I get it right -- saudades. Even in the short time Nancy and I have been with you in Portugal, we've developed a deeper appreciation for that word's meaning. We shall miss you; we shall miss Portugal. And we hope someday you will permit us to return, to visit with you again, and, as you say, muitas saudades.

Until then, on behalf of the American people, we extend our warmest wishes -- we look with hope toward your future and ours, a future we know will be one of democracy and freedom. One in which we also know the Portuguese people will write another great and inspiring chapter in history.

Thank you, and God bless you all.

Note: The President spoke at 12:30 p.m. in the Assembly chamber.

Mt 5:17-19
# Douay-Rheims Vulgate
17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. nolite putare quoniam veni solvere legem aut prophetas non veni solvere sed adimplere
18 For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled. amen quippe dico vobis donec transeat caelum et terra iota unum aut unus apex non praeteribit a lege donec omnia fiant
19 He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. qui ergo solverit unum de mandatis istis minimis et docuerit sic homines minimus vocabitur in regno caelorum qui autem fecerit et docuerit hic magnus vocabitur in regno caelorum
