Reuters PHOTO: "ROMAN CATHOLIC" John Kerry takes communion at AME Church [Is this kosher?]

Perhaps someone on the RELIGION forum can help us.

On tonight's Drudge thread there is some question as to the propriety of a ROMAN CATHOLIC taking communion in a NON-Catholic church.
See, for instance, my post 321:

To: tgslTakoma
The AP and Reuters stories said that he did take communion. Kerry attended Palm Sunday services, but not at a Catholic Church; he went to the Charles Street AME Church in Boston to take Communion.

(It's been a very long time since my Catholic school religion classes, but I seem to remember that it's a big no-no for a Catholic to take Communion in other than a Catholic church. Maybe that rule has changed...)

From Yahoo! NEWS photos:

Kerry will find a new church soon. He can't afford the bad publicity.

It is forbidden. A mockery of the real Blessed Sacrament. I know all my Catholic friends are doing what I am. WE ARE VOTING FOR THE PROTESTANT candidate who is pro life and not for the pro abortion demon in Catholic clothing.

Ha ha! I jst thought of something: Bush is a better Catholic than Kerry ever was!

NOT PERMISSIBLE! As a Catholic presumably Kerry believes in the Real Presence, which AME does not, thus he is refrained by Canon Law from receiving there, though he can participate, just not receive.

What say you?

Apostate! This is a deliberate and intentional act on his part to provoke a response from the Catholic Church.

Catholic Ping - let me know if you want on/off this list

Kissing a book is neither a sacrament nor a statement of faith.

Taking communion is both.

Oh boy, did you good folks notice? Kerry was kneeling down too.

Now that's really depressing.

I say Apostate.

As a member of the Roman Catholic Church, Kerry is obligated to attend mass at a Church in concordance with the Holy See to fulfill his Sunday obligation to 'keep holy the Sabbath Day.' I believe that Russian and Greek Orthodox Churches may fall under this umbrella, being Eastern rather than Latin Rite. Nonetheless, an AME Church fails to qualify.

He did not receive the Eucharist. He did not fulfill his obligation to attend mass. Indeed, he defected to gain political favor. By Church Law, he is therefore no longer a 'practical Catholic,' if indeed he ever was.

And yet, in a way, this is more honest than him going to a Catholic Church. I should imagine he finds the looser stance on abortion and the leftist political philosophy of the AME church to be far closer to his own.

Ironic too, that he condemns the Pope for his condemnation of his political stances; and receives kudos from this minister, for his political stances.

Go figure.

Kerry, take your wife and go. Take the Kennedys with you. We, the Orthodox Catholic Laity, grow tired of you.

I think you've got a point.

Who WILL care? Practical Catholics, who revere and abide by the teachings of the Church and her Divine Founder.

Do any of us think THOSE people are voting Kerry?

The others are probably, to put it bluntly, social or cafeteria catholics. The Church is nothing but a glorified social club to them. They break the rules, why get on Kerry's case?

Pitiful. The words 'millstone around the neck' come to mind.

Definitely NOT allowed.

There was an encyclical on this just in the last couple years as a reminder, so no one can plead ignorance, either.

Politics cloud Kerry's Easter plans
Washington Times ^ | 4/03/04 | Julia Duin
Posted on 04/05/2004 2:34:07 AM PDT by kattracks

Easter is this coming Sunday and where Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic candidate for president, will attend church suddenly has become a political issue.
If the Roman Catholic senator sticks to his home Boston Archdiocese, he faces the implied threat from Archbishop Sean O'Malley of being refused Communion.
Archbishop O'Malley has said since the summer that pro-choice Catholic politicians are in a state of grave sin and cannot properly take Communion, though he mentioned neither Mr. Kerry nor Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, another Massachusetts Democrat.
Two months ago, St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke said Mr. Kerry "must not present himself for Communion" at any church in the city. However, "I might give him a blessing or something," the archbishop added.
Mr. Kerry was in St. Louis on March 28, but he sidestepped the Communion issue by attending New Northside Missionary Baptist Church, where he quoted a few verses from the second chapter of James.
Yesterday, Mr. Kerry again worshipped at a Protestant congregation: Charles Street African Methodist Episcopal Church in Dorchester, Mass.
"We're thankful that there's going to be a revolution in this country ... a new movement," the Rev. Gregory Groover saidfrom the pulpit during the Palm Sunday service. "And we say, God, bring him on, the next president of the United States."
The Kerry campaign has declined comment on his faith and his Easter plans...

WHAT?!?!?!? ... did he think no one would notice????

No, but see he's not daring the Catholic church to refuse him. Not in this case. That doesn't mean there won't be a rebuke.

With these photographs, though, I don't know how anyone could doubt his insincerity any longer.

You are right - it's a no-no, unless under exigent (no Catholic Church is available) circumstances.

He makes up the rules as he goes along, thumbing his nose at all of the rules of the Catholic Church. He'll be very surprised on Judgment Day.
