Two killed in Alaska bear attack

KING SALMON, Alaska - Two people were killed in an apparent bear attack near Kaflia Bay in Katmai National Park on the Alaska Peninsula, Alaska State Troopers said Tuesday.

The bodies were found Monday when a pilot with Andrew Airways arrived to pick up the man and woman and take them to Kodiak, troopers said.

The pilot saw a bear, possibly on top of a body, in the camp and contacted the National Park Service in King Salmon and state troopers in Kodiak.

Park rangers encountered an aggressive bear when they arrived at the campsite and killed it. Investigators then found human remains buried by a bear near the campsite.

The victims, believed to be in their late 30s to early 40s, were from Malibu, Calif. Their identities are being withheld pending notification of relatives.

The remains and the entire campsite were packed out and transported to Kodiak on the Andrew Airways flight.

As the plane was being loaded, another aggressive bear approached and was killed by park rangers and troopers.

The bodies were flown to the state medical examiner’s office for autopsy.

Below is the description I got in an email with the same bear photos and human (ugh..) remains photo...:

The last photo is very graphic and disgusting dead human - but look at the size of that bear! The following pictures are of a guy who works for the forest Service in Alaska. He was out deer hunting. A large world Record Grizzly charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy unloaded a 7mm Mag Semi-auto into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him.

The thing was still alive so he reloaded and capped it in the head. It was over one thousand six hundred pounds, and 12'6" high at the shoulder. It's a world record. The bear had killed a couple of other people. Of course, the game department did not let him keep it. Think about it. This thing on its hind legs could walk up to the average single story house and could look on the roof at eye level. Also his last meal was human.

If they were in a National Park, I don't think that they can be armed legally. However, I am not sure about the parks in Alaska.

thanks for not posting it. One of the favorite movies is "The Edge" about a Kodiak (I believe) chasing 2 men accross an alaska backwoods area (Anthong Hopkins and Alex Baldwin)

Mark, are you one of those people who stops at the roadside attractions to see the "2-headed snake?

I remember something like that at a county fair in WA when I was a kid. May not have been the same bull, but Mark's right -- the thing was ENORMOUS.

In my adult life, I once went the to Houston Livestock show, and had the chance to look at the grand champion Brahma bull. It was just sorta lying there on its haunches, chewing its cud. The damned thing was almost 5 feet tall, lying down!

LOL, actually no. At the county fair, in Vallejo, CA. My buddy and I just decided we would spend a quarter, and see if this was a joke. We thought it was, and that they would just take our money, and show us nothing. We were utterly awe struck when we went in there, and there was actually a bull, and it was the biggest dang bull I had ever seen. It's shoulder was as high as my head. I did not stay in there long, because I figured if this bull went berserk or something, I did not want to be anywhere near it.

Each park has it's own rules. Alaska, if I recall, not only allows campers to be armed but encourages it as a responsible safety measure.

Well that is good to know. It makes sense to be armed anywhere, especially in Alaska, but the Government does not normally make sense or good rules.

Aren't Kodiak bears grizzlies?

Yes. Some are unusually large.

Just Kiddin.

Yep those bulls can get huge. You don't appreciate how big they are until you're standing close by. And then you want to leave.

Why presume the worst and call the dead idiots?

The poor folks may not be as naive as that California lady who went swimming with
the seals (I'm sure it was a spiritual experience while it lasted), but got herself
killed by a great white shark that probably confused her for food (the seals she was with).

But the sad truth is being from Malibu, CA, they probably didn't have a firearm.

From all the stories I've heard about "wildlife", I've decided to just about
not camp in bear or cougar country in a tent, unless I'm really ready to meet my Maker.

Ugh, thats not very much to work with when dealing with 1200 lbs of claws & teeth with a head of steam.

I know you were kidding, becaue I laughed real hard over it. Anyway, yes, it is true, those bulls can get huge, but I thought this bull was bigger than huge. I asked them where it came from. They said it was from Italy. I was speechless, I just could not believe how gigantic it was, and then, you are right, I wanted to get out of there ASAP.
