September 26, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - The Air Force translator accused of espionage at the terrorist prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was likely working for Islamic extremists connected to al Qaeda, The Post has learned. U.S. officials said yesterday that investigators have traced e-mail communications from senior airman Ahmad al-Halabi, a Syrian-born translator from Detroit, to a handful of "individuals" in Syria, including one man - whom they would not identify - suspected of ties to Osama bin Laden's terror network.

That's interesting. It would seem to suggest that Pakistanis we captured in Afghanistan were Pushtu tribesmen from the Northwest Frontier Province and Baluchis from Baluchistan, as opposed to Urdu-speaking Punjabis. (On the other hand, I wonder if we released all or most captured Pakistanis to Pakistan.)

I wonder what sorts of "interesting" documents they were feeding this guy in hopes he'd sent them back to Al Qaeda?

Good point! I'm also beginning to wonder about the chaplain, Yee. They say they've been investigating Al-Halabi, since November, which is the same month Yee got his Gitmo assignment. The terrorist-tied Islamic school that Yee told the NYT he got his certification from says they never certified him and never heard of him. They still haven't filed any charges against Yee, while they threw the book at Al-Halabi. Makes you wonder...

One thing this guy's lawyer said is really bugging me. I haven't seen it in any of the articles so far, but caught it while listening to a Detroit area news show last night.

The lawyer said this: That his client is not only not guilty, but--exact words here--"he's an American patriot".

What the heck is this kind of talk?

Those %'s were the ones for Afghanistan as a whole, not the detainess at Gitmo, aristeides, so we prolly can't draw any conclusions re: the breakdown of languages at Gitmo (if only we could take a peek at one of the spy's laptops! :).

Come to think of it, chances are that many do speak Arabic, I think I read that many non-Arab muslims do so they can read the mooselimb voodoo book in its native voodoo language.

Well, you can pretty much bet that any service member with an Islamic name or of Arab heritage is being looked at very closely now!

Yeah, right. The Commander-in-Chief won't even use the words muslim or islam, choosing instead 'evildoers'.

The only time he says 'islam' is to tell us it's a religion of peace or one of the world's great religions.

Meanwhile, 83 year-old Lutheran grandmas from Ames Iowa are wanded at the airport.

>>>>>Remember on 9-11, when reports that someone outside the government had that day's code for Air Force One?

Code? What is a code? Not the 'actual' code; but what would a code do for an airplane?

Actually, if he said, "Saudi Arabia and Pakistan - the two primary state sponsors of terror who attacked us on September 11, are the enemy", we could skip this whole debate on islam and just target the countries concerned.

If a plane has a really bad code, its ears won't pop when climbing or descending.

There was a time we used to execute illegal combatants and 'mole' spy's. Now we try them in civilian courts, risking our national security.

Gotta love the left and PC.
