September 26, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - The Air Force translator accused of espionage at the terrorist prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was likely working for Islamic extremists connected to al Qaeda, The Post has learned. U.S. officials said yesterday that investigators have traced e-mail communications from senior airman Ahmad al-Halabi, a Syrian-born translator from Detroit, to a handful of "individuals" in Syria, including one man - whom they would not identify - suspected of ties to Osama bin Laden's terror network.

Well, you can pretty much bet that any service member with an Islamic name or of Arab heritage is being looked at very closely now! Good. This needed to happen two years ago.

Man, that must suck.

Going from working for Gitmo, to being a customer at Gitmo.

Say, put the guy to sleep - and hire hollywood to stage a set with 72 virgins, and call it Paradise. He'll think he's dead and gone to Heaven - and spill his guts.

afterwards, you cut his nards off.

"...Ahmad al-Halabi, a Syrian-born translator from Detroit..."

Make that 'a Syrian citizen who moved to Detroit w/ his parents 9 years ago, and lied to the USAF about having become a US citizen".

Al-Halabi, 24, was arrested in Florida on July 23 while returning to his home in California and charged with 30 counts of espionage and failing to report improper contact with the Syrian Embassy. He says he's innocent.

He was arrested back in July and we're just finding out now?

I'm guessing there is more to theinvestigation and others have been watched for some time now

This lad's lack of US citizenship could make things a bit tougher on him, eh?

And we still have Democrats complaining about how "poorly" we treat the Gitmo prisoners.

May these guys never see the light of day again.

They may have set a trap for him by sending him to Gitmo and then watching him closely.....Dream assignment for an Al Queda guy.

These few arrests may be just the tip of the iceberg. Al-Qaeda and other groups bent on the US destruction have had a decade to infiltrate into many aspects of our government and society.

Remember on 9-11, when reports that someone outside the government had that day's code for Air Force One? And that was sort of quieted, but never really denied.

Remember in the '90's that our President was too busy watching golf to take any action against terrorists.

Some serious and severe cleansing needs to be taking place (if it hasn't already) in every "essential" branch of government. You see one or two cockroaches--that means there are a thousand more in hiding.

Where does it say he wasn't a US citizen?

"Remember in the '90's that our President was too busy watching golf to take any action against terrorists."

Now let's be fair. That wasn't the only thing that required his attention.

He also had to coordinate the disappearances of over a hundred witnesses to various scandals, gather intelligence for the PRC, and expose the junior White House staff to his "leadership".

Say what you want about Clinton, the man keeps busy.

One would hope so. I believe the spooks call it "walking the dog" (whilst paying close attention to the assholes it's sniffing).

Damn, nasty stutter there, Terp! :)

Other articles have indicated that he isn't a citizen (not req'd for mil service, of course), and that he lied to USAF about being naturalized in 2001.

Hope I haven't confoosed this guy w/ one of the others, but I'm pretty sure this is the one. Moved to Dearborn originally, then Detroit.

His lack of US citizenship isn't enough to keep him from being charged with treason. He is still considered one of The People of this country, having immigrated here, and owes the same duty of loyalty as a citizen.
