Candidates Speak On "Armstrong & Getty Show"

POSTED: 12:13 p.m. PDT September 12, 2003 UPDATED: 1:27 p.m. PDT September 12, 2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom McClintock had a date of sorts Friday morning.

The hosts of Sacramento talk radio program "The Armstrong and Getty Show" on Talk 650 KSTE arranged a surprise on-air confrontation between the two. McClintock asked Schwarzenegger repeatedly to debate him, and the actor demurred.

McClintock asked: "We've got a Republican convention coming up this weekend, you and I are the two Republican candidates now left in the race, why don't we get together and discuss the major issues of this campaign?"

Schwarzenegger replied that he'd be, in his words, "more than happy" to "get together" with the state senator from Northridge.

McClintock repeated his question: "Can we do that in a debate before the convention Saturday? We're both going to be there."

Schwarzenegger said "No," adding that he would be more than happy to meet with McClintock and discuss issues.

The actor then told McClintock the important thing is to work together on issues. McClintock extended the debate offer a final time and Schwarzenegger signed off by saying, "We will talk about all those things, and we will have a great time at the Republican convention."

A Los Angeles Times poll released late Thursday showed McClintock with support from 18 percent of likely voters to Schwarzenegger's 25 percent. McClintock's support grew 6 percentage points since the August poll, while Schwarzenegger's grew 3 percentage points. Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante was the leading candidate in the poll, with 30 percent.

"The Armstrong & Getty Show" also airs on KQCA-58 TV.

McClintock decided to commit political suicide and is following his plan for this unwaveringly and meticulously.

" Pleas for Mr. McClintock to quit the contest have come from a variety of sources — the White House, working through surrogates in California; leading elected Republicans in the state; and the Schwarzenegger campaign. Mr. McClintock has stood fast.

"He wouldn't respond to pressure, even from the White House," said Mr. Spillane, who is not working for any gubernatorial campaign. "It's not in his nature. He's a maverick."

I think if Tom were a real man. He'd challenge Arnold to an arm wrestling match. But Arnold would probably decline that too, because he's too much of a gentleman to beat up on the handicapped.

you know you just make an ass out yourself when you post that TOM MC has a small following in the state....

maybe you could look at the last election and see that voters who supported Davis also thought enough of Tom to
vote for him down ticket after being outspent 5 to 1 by a dotcom millionaire... you're a complete idiot if you can't
figure out how much of a following he has and that those same people will support him again for his conservative fiscal positions (that clueless Ahnuld has adopted) and the additional turnout of mad voters this time will include the stay at home conservatives coming out for Prop 54 and the car tax issue! That's a winning combo for Tom but all you linguini Repubs want to winnnnnnn with a rookie who will raise taxes just like Wilson did... remember, only Repub govenors RAISE taxes, demos just spent like crazy....
its not hard to figure out if you pay attention

ps.... if the state is so left that Tom can't win, then please explain: '94 Prop 187 & 184 -3 strikes %illegals
'96 209 - end Affirm Action
'98 227 - end BiLingual Educ
'00 22 - Marriage is Man/Woman
(WOW what a left wing bunch of voters!!!!!!!!!!!)

Your opinion is wrong. Please change it.
If the only thing he does is get rid of the DL for illegals, it was a good choice.

First of all, I expect more from a Governor. There are MANY more problems than driver's licenses. Last I heard, Arnold would not support the referendum. Without the referendum, those illegals will already HAVE the licenses!

With McClintock, we get the DL solution and solutions to other fiscal issues in this state. Those fiscal problems are the ONLY reason I endorse the recall. Arnold has offered NO solutions, so on what basis are you suggesting I change my opinion? Had Arnold come out from behind his handlers and show he is equipped to deal with this crisis, I would (and did) consider voting for him. His constant wavering, deflecting, ducking, and denials have only resulted in my disgust.

He got a softball interview from Bill O'Reilly. When pressed for just a little bit of substance, Arnold looked like a deer in the headlights and came up empty. I will not vote for an incompetent candidate, regardless of which party they choose to put their name next to.

The real problem is that McClintock with all his years of being in the Party and running for offices can't muster much over 28% of the Republican Party voters....

I looked at your GOP poll numbers, and the implication is that if he's showing 18% in the general voting public polls, his voters are coming from outside the Republican Party. Where would Tom be if Republican Party regulars figure out one day that the only reason he's not running ahead of The Schwarz is because they lack the confidence to believe that a person sharing their principles and values can win the recall election?

GREAT question to ask about your pro-abortion candidate, Arnold. Why does he, as reports have it, support allowing gay couples to adopt young kids? Jeremiah didn't give him that policy, I'll tell you. And Jeremiah wouldn't be voting for him, I'll wager

Yeah. "Maverick." Perfect model for a man leading a predominantly Democratic state with houses held by 'rats.

Beautiful.

And this "suicide" thing. Makes me think of those homicide bombers. I always think, "Look, if you want to blow yourself up, find some nice desolate place in the desert to do it."

But McC's self-immolation threatens to take the state with him.

Read my post again. Do you think you could respond to the point I was making, rather than telling me about your dream candidate, and how Arnold isn't him?

(He isn't mine, either.)

Yep, he's wrong and a fool on that issue.

He's better than Bustamante, but still wrong.

Your point?

Doesn't matter, Tom has screwed the CA voters in this election.

I hate to see this since before Arnold, there wasn't a chance to win this race.

McClintock can't stand to see anyone else but him win and being he can't, McClintock can't see letting another Republican walk in to what he can't possible earn on his own merits.

Okay.... Listen one more time.

IMO, Arnold is not competent. There is NOTHING worse.
Got it?

How about this...
"Schwarzenegger has run a pretty liberal campaign, in some respects to the left of Bustamante,"
former state Republican Party Chairman Michael Schroeder
Sacramento Bee, Thursday, July 24, 2003

How about you switch to the right side here?

Are you kidding? Support Bustamante? Never happen!

Arnold is to Bustamante's right on abortion, guns, taxes, immigration, Prop 13, immigration, English-only...

Given that the only choices are Bustamante or Schwarzenegger, that Bustamante would be an absolute DISASTER for our state, and that Schwarzenegger handily beats Bustamante (if McC could start thinking of someone other than himself for a moment), why would I ever support Bustamante?

The 18% you refer to is from the LA Times Poll which I didn't cite the internals on as I don't know them. The polls I cited have him as follows:

Survey USA ..16%
CA. Field .. 14%
CA C of C .. 12%

Yes he's drawing some from the Indies/etc. but not a huge amount. The point is he's not exactly setting the Republicans on fire to vote for him and he's the one that has grown up in the CA Republican Party and been in office off and on for some 20 something years.... You would think he'd being doing better with them.... or is that telling us something?

They didn't report that Arnold's first response was "we are having a debate in just a few days, on the 23rd". I heard this show, and Arnold handled himself very well. The other misleading statement is that it was a surprise. It was, to Arnold, but Tom had set this up ahead of time with Armstrong and Getty. It was an ambush of sorts.

Well now I see the problem: An apparent inability to comprehend English.
It would be clear to a 3rd grader that I said nothing of the kind.

Yes, clearly one of us is having comprehension problems.

Any vote not cast for Schwarzenegger is support for Bustamante. Simple math.

You tell me not to support Schwarzenegger. The ONLY alternative is to support Bustamante. There are various ways to do it (vote for him, vote for Gary Coleman, don't vote, vote for McClintock).

But I'm not having any of them.

You live in California? You should do the same. You DON'T want Bustamante as governor!

Defeat Bustamante. Vote Schwarzenegger!

Yes, Tom did know, Arnold did not. I was listening live. Also, strangely enough, Tom's campaign manager spent the entire interview time on the phone with someone really badmouthing Armstrong and Getty to someone. The hosts were told about it afterwards by their coworkers who heard it all, and they went ballistic. The McClintock crew was apparently angry over a few minutes delay in scheduling because Arnold was being interviewed. Not a good way to behave at all.
