A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....09-08-03....Military Monday

A Few of FR's Finest
....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

Thanks, Mixer!

1) Click on the graphic to open the Calendar.
2) Once there you can click on any month and even click to the right to go into next year. Once you are in the month that you joined FR you will need to click on the number in the calendar and then an add item screen will come up.
3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit.
4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it.
5) If all else fails or simply if you want me to do this for you send me a FReepmail and I will gladly do it for you. ~Mixer

There also was discrimination against military wives and children, MEG33. You felt very conspicuous, having a base decal on your bumper, wondering if someone would get 'ideas' to protest against/take advantage of you.

Myrtle Beach was a mixed bag, and the locals all right, but the influx of tourist outsiders kept you wary.

Worst of all was teaching that year in the elementary school on base (my sons in the 7th and 8th grades there; daughter in kindergarten) and - surprisingly - having no support from co-workers, most of whom were military wives.

Not one time was I contacted (there were 300 of us wives with husbands deployed to SE Asia living on base) by someone on base to see if I needed any help.
The only one who did was the Okinawan wife of a fellow who had worked with my husband.

I finally figured out the other wives feared if they acknowledged the separation, their husbands might be tapped to go next.....too close to home to think about for them. They all were pleasant and friendly, but never asked about him or how I was doing - rather weird, eh?

In May of 1968, the 300 of us were unceremoniously told to vacate quarters ASAP to make room for a Reserve Unit being mobilized because of the Pueblo Crisis.

Myrtle Beach in May?? Most places rented for the season a year ahead, and prices jacked up? Many of us with no "back home" option available?

Again, Uncle Sam did it "Sink or Swim" style. To make it worse, my husband was due back in 5 months, in October, and I could not get anything with a lease for longer than that.

Military wives lean on God a lot - - good thing He is there 24/7.....

You description of dress reminds of the shock I got when my son came home from college in need of a haircut and with a mustache!

When my brother let his hair grow in the 70's, I just said to our dad, "Bet you're not man enough to make him cut his hair."

My brother had to pass dad's "inspection" before he gave my brother the money to pay the barber. He got two more trims.

Well, let's see. My daughter's name is Holly. Her 16th birthday was 9-11-2001. She has been a Parents Dream her whole life. She shipped-out to Air Force basic training last tuesday. Her job will be AIRBORNE CRYPTOLOGIC LINGUIST - Mandarin Chinese. We have not heard from her since she left, but I am sure she is fine. As soon as I here from her I will post any updates.

p.s. I am her father. :)

As you are learning, The Finest Room in The FR House loves and welcomes all things related to the military!
You appear to be a veteran yourself (or active military?), and it is our privilege to honor those who have served and support those now in service to our nation.

We will indeed follow Holly with great interest and a lot of prayers.

I summoned a Special Angel to watch over Holly:

Heh, no offense taken at all!
I think kindness, love, and attention made my kids turn out as well as they all have. Not to mention it keeps me young, low stress. :)

Actually, Holly's birth kept me from serving in the military. She was born when I was 19. But I like to think I've done my part in raising outstanding young citizens!

Thank you for keeping us in your prayers!

P.S. But please be nicer to Aunt Free and Billie. They really are nice...REALLY REALLY.

But Gizmo, I have been nice to both today.

Gave Billie a warm greeting. In exact words I said "Hi, Billie."

As for Free, I held my tongue despite her vicious taunting of me.

:-)

Hiya Spruce! My son just finished tech school at Sheppard AFB and just got his orders to go to The AFB in Tucson. He is going to be a munitions systems specialist (bomb dude). If you ahve a chance to go to Lackland for basic graduation, go! We went and it was a very impressive ceremony!
