Some Rules 72oz. Steak Rule # 1 is to have fun. We really want you to win! The $50 dinner consist of a baked potato, salad, shrimp cocktail, roll, and a 72-ounce top sirloin steak. You must sit at the designated table in our dining room. You may not leave the table for any reason once the contest starts. No one may assist you in any way (such as cutting up your meal). You must complete the dinner in 1 hour (if you can't do the meal in an hour, you ain't going get it done in 2 hours anyway). You may not share your meal even if you don't complete the dinner (like take it back to your table to be shared by any folks you may have invited to cheer you on). If you get sick (its been know to happen) the contest is over, period. You can order the steak cooked anyway you want. We will allow you a sample bite (small) prior to the start of the timer to make sure it is cooked to your satisfaction and the taste meets with your approval. Then we start the timer for one hour. You do not have to eat the fat or gristle (if you can find any), but we must judge this. Again, we want you to win but we do know our meats and will judge accordingly. The contest is just that, a contest. The steak is not offered on our menu as a meal. We do not allow the dinner to be ordered as a meal (unless you want to spend $200). It takes us a little more than a half an hour to cook the steak and it is available 365 days a year from 8:00am to 9:30pm. Enough with the rules! Refer to rule #1 - HAVE FUN!
Of course, when you take the 72oz. challenge at home, you don't have to limit yourself to one hour...and, you can share it with your friends and family. Most importantly, you now gain the bragging rights to say you too have savored the taste of this Texas-sized steak.
The successful 72oz. steak eaters in our restaurant will take home a special limited-edition t-shirt proclaiming their gastronomical feat. So until you are able to visit us in Amarillo, why not have a practice session in your own home? Invite a few friends over, and have a Big Texan party!

I can't imagine that you're going to enjoy this meal, so why not treat it like a giant steak salad. Cut up the steak, potato, salad and mix it in a bowl. Cut up the roll, and use it like croutons. Add some moisture - like salad dressing or vinegar.
Then you can just shovel it down fast before your stomach knows what's there. Eating fast seems to be the key to these contests - once you start eating you don't dare pause for cutting or moving plates.
Prepare, then shovel! :-)

It took me over a year before I could eat a shrimp again. And I still have trouble eating shrimp now. I have a similary relationship with Jagermeister. May 1995, and I will still come close to puking if I smell the stuff.

The man (in a thick Indian accent) explained that in his country people just aren't big eaters and they were amazed by how much food Americans could consume. So it turned out that I was sort of a sideshow act for them (and maybe the fact I was consuming their sacred cows). I was an entertainment act for them just as a snake charmer in India would be for me. I am in grad school with some Indian guys who pretty much say the same thing.

Good idea, I have been thinking about doing that, although some of our doctors and scientists here seem to have different opinions. But hey, isn't FR great? Where else could a guy get such good advice about such an important issue?

Country Kitchen in Portland (Gresham) Oregon had a 64-oz that if you finish it, the meal is free. It's really good, too.
Don't starve beforehand. Have one large meal 24hrs beforehand.

Great. I would love to do it on the same date. Perhaps we could get a freeper to come and run a live thread while we are in action.

I am in grad school with some Indian guys who pretty much say the same thing. Maybe you should invite them to watch you eat the 72 oz steak.
To: Rodney King
What are you thinking exactly? Should I bring a shot or two of whiskey to have during the meal? Yes, if they'll let you. Perhaps they have a liquor license, and can bring you something from the bar.
The effect will be best felt late in the meal, when you're really feeling the pinch. Brandy is a traditional finish to a large, heavy meal, and this is why.
Oh, yes, I forgot one last piece of advice: if the waiter offers you a "wafer-thin" mint, TURN IT DOWN.
To: Rodney King
Rodney, just be sure to decline the wafer thin mint.....

(I like steak. I like prime rib. 24 oz is my limit, though, but poorman's friend can eat that steak!)

LOL! You guys think alike! The thread is three hours old and almost two hundred replies long, and the first two mentions of Mr. Creosote occur on consecutive posts one minute apart. I guess the time was just right.

OK, so we've just about hit upon every possible bit of advise possible, eat the potato first, eat the potato last, eat the potato in between, get stoned, drink bitters, work out, eat a lot before, starve before, drink water, no water, etc. Having witnessed Kobayashi's 2 Nathan's victory, I can tell you that the trick is the rapid consumption of the food, with a stomach muscle that is well trained in expanding and breathing at a constant rate to increase digestive tract movement. Also remember from the tv show on the history channel that you should try to stay leaning forward or just upright as long as possible, leaning back will decrease your stomach cavity size.
We're the same height and weight, and there's no way I could down 72 oz's. If you can, get the potato mashed, and eat it last. The carb's as stated previously will wreck your will power.

How many contestants have died within a week of this torture er...contest? I have driven by the sign. If I was twenty years younger, I would try it for kicks.

Wow! do you bring back the memories.
It was the late 60's and I had just got out of the service. My parents lived in Tigard so I settled in with them for a time. There was this tavern in NW Portland called the 10 til 2 that had a cheeseburger that was about 6 inches tall, it had everything in it, including a fried egg and bacon. They had a deal if you could eat two of them and drink a pitcher of beer in an hr it was free. One night I took the challenge and was successful(did not feel so good afterwards)My friends imm. said they wanted to take me to the Country Kitchen to see if I could do the same thing there. We went one night, I took one look at what it entailed and said no way! There was a picture on the wall of a Catholic Priest who regularly came in, and ate it just for drill. He was not a big man either. I always wondered if the Country Kitchen was still there. Thanks!
