Social conservatives have a viable candidate in McClintock
TORONTO, August 28, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Steve Jalsevac, a long-time political analyst with Campaign Life Coalition Canada suggests that were actor Arnold Schwarzenegger to capture the Republican Governorship of California it would mean political damage for the Republican Party. "A core constituency within the Republican Party is its social conservatives, most importantly those who are pro-life and pro-family. Schwarzenegger is so obviously a liberal on social issues, his running as a Republican reeks of opportunism and demeans the party's integrity," said Jalsevac.
Republicans have another capable candidate in the race who is considered authentically conservative. California State Sen. Tom McClintock, first elected to the State Assembly in 1982, is also running. McClintock ran for state controller last year and lost by a margin of 0.3% to a Democrat. In that race, McClintock captured more votes than any other Republican on the ballot. In an interview with Human Events released today, McClintock acknowledges that he is pro-life and pro-family and willing to act legislatively on those convictions.
"As we have seen so many times in Canadian politics, conservative parties are usually a delicate balance between fiscal and social conservatives, and where fiscal conservatives are so insensitive as to alienate social conservatives, the Party suffers debilitating division," Jalsevac told LifeSite News. "Arnold may well give the Republicans Governorship of another state, but his strong liberal stance on social issues will damage Party unity and weaken critical differences in policy between the two major parties."
On a radio talk show yesterday, Schwarzenegger attempted to appear less offensive to social conservatives saying that he is pro-choice, but against "partial-birth" abortion; that he supports current domestic-partnership law but not gay 'marriage'". However, Schwarzenegger's Republican strategist Allan Hoffenblum was candid about the actor's negligible chances of appealing to social conservatives. Speaking of "family-value types", Hoffenblum said, "that is the group that is least likely to vote for Arnold Schwarzenegger regardless."

Those token endorsements really helped, eh? It was particularly a fisaco in Illinois where RINO George Ryan actually HURT Bush's campaign with his "endorsement". He couldn't find a single issue that he agreed with Bush on, so he kept telling reporters that be believed "a Republican President will work towards our shared goal of getting a third airport in the Chicago area", even though Gov. Bush hadn't made any kind of statement on aviation in Chicao (Ryan later abandoned his 'third airport' plan, BTW) Everywhere the two Georges campaigned together, reporters would gleeful ask Bush "Why can't you be more COMPASSIONATE like the REPUBLICAN governor of Illinois and halt all the dangerous executions of inmates that might be INNOCENT?" Of course, the RINO governor of Illinois didn't bother to point out that Texas' justice system was nothing like Illinois and certainly not riddled with botched convictions. George Bush had no comment. The state went to Gore by over 10 points, a reord high in the midwest and alarmingly solid lead in a swing state. With the RINO governor having a 20 approval rating, Republicans stayed home in droves. You can thank the corrupt RINO Governor and his personal "campaign management" of Bush in Illinois for that.
BTW, our "Republican" governor is going to be indicted soon.
In a choice between allying with socially conservative family people among blacks and Latinos on the one hand (even with social spending costs) or allying with fiscally obsessive RINO people who are enemies on the issues that count, I'll take my stand with social conservatives every time. Those are not today's choices (other than Tom McClintock) but they will be if either the GOP maintains GOP principles or its social conservatives go back across the aisle with their primary votes. The issues count. The party does not matter except as a vehicle for the translation of principles into public policy. If the GOP becomes an issues vacuum and a principles vacuum it will again go the way of its Federalist and Whig predecessors. Social conservatives give the GOP its reason to live. Those who wish to surrender on social issues as listed above are Republicans in name only because they view the party as a vehicle for personal power and wealth only or as merely not the Demonrats. No social conservative will EVER be loyal to RINOs.
Arnold is managed by UberRINO Planned Barrenhood Wilson and advised by Warren Buffett. Arnold is a personal libertine as to behavior as well as beliefs. Arnold is primarily supported by a combination of enemies of Republicanism, enemies of civilization, and people too obsessed with money and celebrity to bother to care about anything other than their own wallets. NO SALE! Arnold is a marionette of the likes of Wilson and Buffett because of his past personal immorality, present personal amorality and theoretical immorality and general flabbiness as a person despite all those muscles.
If McClintock were not electable (which is nothing but the usual RINO planted axiom about any principled GOP candidate), then there are NO acceptable alternatives. Doofus can be continued in office because Arnold will have hijacked the recall effort and rendered it meaningless. Their policies will not be meaningfully different. They will both be advocates of evil. They are both lying weasels. Whether you believe it or not, they will both be tax thieves extraordinaire and spendoholics as well. Doofus will pour your money down public sector union drains. Arnold will enrich Wilson's fat friends. You pay the same, one way or another.
Bustamante might even be a smidgeon better than Arnold or Grayout. He can prove that Demonrats cannot govern period generally and not just Doofus. Bustamante will build the GOP like no other candidate.
Note that Cruz is suffering serious bleeding among Hispanic voters (just because he is Cruz and not because of Arnold). They are not the monolith that many of you fear---YET. Those Hispanic voters will dominate California in the future and they had better feel welcome in the GOP. This will not be accomplished by trust-fund Republicanism but by assuring them that the GOP will not facilitate the abortion of their grandchildren or encourage their son Juan to marry Pedro. No Demonrat, not even Bustamante, can satisfy their social conservatism.
Learn again to drive wedges deep into the Demonrat coalitions instead of sniffling in the closet about how awfully liberal California is and how simply impossible it is to convince the increasingly Demonratic polo pony and watercress sandwich set to vote for pro-lifers and pro-family candidates. If you seek their votes by liberalizing on spending, the GOP will always be brand X, but the GOP advantage with the Hispanics is on social issues like abortion and resistance to homosexuality where the GOP is the brand name item.
The future is coming whether you lie it or not and in California it will be a Hispanic future. You can regard the Mexicans as alien beings from another planet and suffer the consequences or you can recognize that Muffy and Skipper in La Jolla are the strangers to Republicanism because they are social revolutionaries, that their political influence is ending because of demographics because the social conservatives have children while the social liberals have vacations at Club Med but vacations do not vote, that the influx of Hispanics dooms existing arrangements and that the only questions are which party will control the future that IS coming and how will it be controlled.
RINOs give Republicans and other conservatives and especially social conservatives ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Arnold is the worst of the three mentioned because he destroys the California GOP for a generation to come if he wins. Vote McClintock early and often or pay the consequences as a party and as a state. Arnold and especially Wilson and Buffett are NOT worth any compromise at all.
It seems to be as well run as the California Republican Party. Those guys are on an electoral roll. Listening to the death before electibility "pure types" reminds me of the far lefties. They seem to have two things in common:
---they think the problem is they aren't "pure" enough
---they keep losing
A sweeping new domestic-partner rights just passed the State Senate. How did Tommy vote? Hint: He did not vote at all.
Tommy is the guy you expect to do something about gay marriage? Whatever his talk on this issue, it is clear that he does not walk that talk.
With the exeption of the above, I strongly agree with your post. I raised my family that way, and have children I can be proud of.
You seem closed to the idea of personal redemption. Perhaps there are no episodes or acts in your youth that you now regret. If so, you may count yourself fortunate. But there are many who look back and regret things they have done; and have resolved to change, and have changed, their lives.
Arnold married a very religious catholic woman, almost 20 years ago, and remains married, now with four children. By every account, he has become a devoted family man and is raising his children in the faith. He is involved with the church and has been very generous with his time and money to any number of worthy projects.
I'm not saying "behold a saint"; but neither is he a priest of the anti-Christ as some have painted him. If a man's actions are any guide to his character, this is a man who has learned over time that faith and family and freedom are the important things in life. You may scoff, but I believe he will be a moral presence in Sacramento.
Again, Giuliani did a fine job as mayor but in NYC, you may remember, Ronaldus Maximus came within 27,000 votes (closer than any GOP presidential candidate since Calvin Coolidge) of carrying NEW YORK CITY against Jimmuh Carter but, of course, RINOs are more attractive candidates. Why? Because they say so, silly!
- You feel that social conservatism is more important than fiscal conservatism. Fair enough.
- Your resort to smears and sarcastic characterization says you're capable only of preaching to the choir. You'll attract no one else.
- I have a problem with McClintock which I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else but which seems very real to me. He says he'll enforce Proposition 187 and border control to the limits of his powers. I don't believe he has a chance in hell of anything substantive. He'll lose in court and to the federal government. I believe he's grandstanding - playing Wallace standing on the steps. The risks of social anarchy and severe international consequences are too great and he knows it.
I'm pretty sure Canadian pro-life activists have enough to worry about in their elections without borrowing trouble by worrying about our elections.
