SEATTLE - Seattle tied a record Monday for 49 straight days of temperatures of 70 degrees or higher.
Meteorologist Jeff Rood with the National Weather Service says it's "iffy" whether the record will broken. The forecast high for Tuesday is only 71 degrees and a few clouds over Sea-Tac Airport could make all the difference.
But if the string holds, the forecast is for warmer weather so those 70s days could run into September.
The old record was set in 1958 in roughly the same time period - from July 9 to Aug. 26.
Rood says Seattle temperatures have been a couple of degrees above normal this summer, but it's not that far out of the normal variation. He notes some parts of the country have been much hotter.
It's also been dry in Seattle. Precipitation at Sea-Tac since June first has totaled less than an inch - 0.89.
The driest June through August was 0.84 in 1987. Records at the airport go back to 1945. Taking a look at record from the Federal Building in downtown Seattle, which started in 1891, the driest June through August was 0.65 in 1919.

Here in North Texas it's been 99+ every day for over two months now.
And this is a "cool" summer.

It's true that extreme weather of any kind is rare here, but there are too many Fourths of July when it's 65 degrees and overcast. But there's no place better in September and October - 65-75 degrees and generally sunny. But come November . . .

What does 70 degrees feel like?
To: Steve_Seattle
See, to me, the ideal weather day is 68 degrees. Overcast is fine with me. I just don't want to deal with the weather than makes you drip sweat or freeze.
I know one thing that bugs a lot of transplants to Seattle is the lack of sun. It never bothered me at all, even though I came from western Nebraska where we had lots of sunny days.
When my youngest daughter was 3, we moved to Hawaii for a few months. Our first day there we were eating outside at a picnic table and she looked up and said, "What's that funny blue stuff in the sky?"
Yep, Seattle kid for sure.

Is it anything like escargot?
I can eat Clams and I am okay with Calamari (Fried only), but Oysters, Mussels, Escargot are all nasty.

Did you know that Seattle is the sun glasses sales capital of the worldI read that! I figure they just couldn't take the sun after months of clouds and rain. : ) I've had the same pair that I moved up here with - an organized conservative compared to the scatter-brained liberals who generally populate the area...

Less Seattle lives on, I see.
(But for my part, I'd want FReepers moving here to displace those others...)

I am an ex-steamfitter welder (15 years under the hood) and don't wear them. I figure the UV light from welding has made me a non-sensitive to the sunlight, heck I barely squint when I am out and about. I have a pair though and I think I've worn them twice this year...

The Seattle Tower is the 1927 art deco building at 1218 Third Avenue.
To: angry elephant
That thing is so cool! I am a real art deco fan and have been an admirer of that building for some time.
Not enough, apparently, to know it's name, however...
