Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003
Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.
``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.
``Our investigation continues,'' she said.
The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.
Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.
More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.
Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.
Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

I have to agree with most of what Blackelk has to say on this issue. I must admit, however, my first reaction was that I was glad to see this pervert go to meet his maker.

Absolutely not. The State did not give him a death sentence, but left a 67 year old man in the area of a 37 year old cold killer. It's clear that the state set the man up. This is wrong, no matter what Mr. Geoghan did. He was their charge, and they did not do their job.

You are incoherent

No; if they wanted to execute him, go at it. But since they didn't, they have a fiduciary responsibility to protect the man
To: TheAngryClam
Let's reduce the sentences of any inmate who kills another inmate by four months for every inmate they take out.
I like it!
To: sobieski
they have a fiduciary responsibility to protect the manThe terminology "the man" implies he was human. Humans don't bugger their young.

No, you're equating "time" with "torture, murder, and rape."
Geoghan and everyone else in prison, from the car stereo thief to the tax cheat to the deadbeat dad to the serial killer is in prison to do their time. They weren't sentenced to gang rape, getting an uncoiled bedspring stabbed into their kidney, or getting daily beatings.
We obviously have different ideas about what "doing the time" is. Mine is incarceration and deprivation of freedom. Yours is some 3rd world cesspool's way of handling criminals.

I too wish that the Vatican and others would speak out more against the homosexual issue, and I also like you feel that is the root problem. It just seemed you were saying anyone who isn't raging against the problem is part of the problem.

Is there any doubt that the Roman Catholic Church is a tool of Satan?
None what so ever to me.
It's really sad because there are a lot of spiritually minded people in the faith, but the core of it is rotten! The lengths they went through to cover up the molestations is beyond acceptable.
Satan himself would be very proud!

Of course not.
And to some degree I believe that is true, but homosexuals do like and want young men, how young is the decision on maybe when they would be considered a pedophile.
If a 50 yr old homosexual man is with a 17 or 18 yr old boy would he be considered a pedophile? Most homosexuals do not last into there golden years because it is not a relationship based on commitments that heterosexual people for the most part attain to. I am not saying in hetero relationships a man who is married 30 yrs to a woman does not once in awhile leave for a younger version of his wife, but in homosexual unions they never even get to to that point, so I think most homosexuals are hidden pedophiles.

Well let me say this: Do you think that a healthy young man that joins the preisthood is not going to at some point let sex get in the way of his thoughts and mind? I am not talking about sexual perversions or perverts but I think G-D created sex for a reason and a man especially would want to know that intimacy in some way and I think that can lead him into some behaviors that lead him into sexual perversion. I just think a man who can be married in the Catholic Church would be a healthier enviroment for the Vatican and all catholics.

That is totally un-true.
Be that I am in the Medical Field and worked in a Trauma center emergency room, this is false, on-coming lights have to do with people that are under the influence of hard drugs and alcohol that make them become dis-oriented and they cross over into oncoming traffic. People need to speak about Marijuana on this thread with more hard facts rather than be judgemental about what they think Pot truly is.

I just think that a normal man who wants a sexual commited intimacy with a woman and is a catholic might be drawn to the preisthood if they could be married and have a family. what a reflection he could be to other catholics and to the vatican. It might reduce pedophiles that are attracted to the presithood.

How fitting that another demon punched his ticket
Interesting point view! Never thought of it that way, but it makes sense to me...
To: dagoofyfoot
Excuse me, but I did NOT pose the assertion that the Roman Catholic Church is a tool of Satan and I said that those who say it is are perhaps the real tools.
To: sobieski
"Absolutely not. The State did not give him a death sentence"
Obviously, they did. He is dead. Society administered punishment.
I also think the jail did not take action to protect him, but then again, those little boys had no protection when he raped them, either.
