Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

Your wild, innacurate and embittered rant proves my point perfectly, the anti-Catholic bigots out there will find ways to hate all Catholic priests, one way or another. One must wonder what "distanced themselves" means; allow a few perverts to force the 99.99% of the good priests to leave the Church? Just how "distant" can they get, anyway? I'm certain that precious few priests knew what was going on in the private, sick lives of the tiny percentage of perverts in their ranks. You need to take better meds for your paranoia.

I am a part of "the faithful", and priests still do have a great image with me. The sins of a small percentage of priests will never force me to condemn them all. (Thank God the Church teaches us not to judge, knowing we are incapable of doing it right - bigots like you are dangerous to good people when you make judgements).

Three hundred thousand Catholic priests in the world, and less than 300 of them are involved in this scandal. I'm wondering how you conclude that the 299,700 other priests were intimately aware of the darkest secrets amongst the homosexual perverts in their ranks? How easy it is to kick around a priest, a gentle man called to minister Christ's gospel; a man of love, steeped in the grace of living a life of understanding and forgiveness; a man whose existence is one of helping others by giving counsel, administering the Sacraments, hearing confessions, burying the dead, celebrating the marriages, baptising the infants, visiting the sick, and living an often-times lonely and thankless life of service.

What a brave man you are to attack men like this, who are so steeped in Jesus Christ and His mercy that most of them would just lay down and die for their faith rather than fight the angry bigots of this world.

Someone has probably answered you by now but he was a pedophile and molested girls and boys. A very sick man. Not knowing what caused him to be such a twisted sick pervert,I can't but wonder if God may judge him more mercifully than he will judge me.

Once when someone who loved me,and I loved in return,asked me to stay and eat lunch with her at the Nursing home,I "chose" to lie and say I had something else to do and left. I can still hear her calling my name and recall my thinking about turning around,but continuing out

yes I now have the proper definitions down pat.

I never had any problems really, although I was seduced by a 22 year old woman when I was 15. I doubt many 15 year old boys would have felt that was anything but good fortune.

I did feel guilty due to my fairly religious upbringing and never told my folks till was fully grown...like 35 or so.

I am assuming that you have not considered that marijuana smokers may be "drawn" to light? Maybe you have not heard this but more than several head-ons were caused by marijuana smokers,who crossed the yellow line because they were "drawn" to oncoming headlights.Heard this from emergency room staffs,told to them while treating accident victims.

I'm always amazed at the people who even consider the Jesus shouldn't have been/didn't deserve to be crucified thing. There's two perspectives to look at- the Roman (that is, secular) and the Christian. In order:

1) The Roman: Jesus was a rabble rouser. That didn't get looked upon kindly by the Empire, and rightly so. Execution.

2) The Christian: The death and ressurection of Jesus is THE pivotal point in the Christian belief system, no matter how much televangelists and the door-to-door types tell you it was his preaching and ministry on Earth. For Jesus to die for all mankind, he kind of needed to die.

Which is why I've also never understood the urge by some people to consider Jews guilty of theicide- Jesus HAD to be executed for the whole redemption and ressurection thing to work. It's a necessary part of the whole thing.
