Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003

Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

"Christ forgives all sinners."

Not "ALL."

ONLY if the sinner asks for "forgiveness" in His name and accepts His gift.

How many of these people were married? Your implication is specious at best.

Yeah cause he wasn't paying attention like a person lighting a cigarette or talking on a cell phone if you are in your car you should be paying attention to driving only.

You were trying to blame it on pot weren't you?

If all sinners are forgiven, one has to wonder what is the need for a Hell???

Hell was created for the Devil and his angels...and all men who want to follow him instead of God.

Christ made a way out for men. But only those who accept will be forgiven.

Christ didn't die for the Devil and demons. They will not be forgiven.

Probably it would be better to put those drug users who rob and burglarize together in cells apart from the murderers and rapists. The murderers and rapists should be together.

Actually, I'm quite sure that's what they do.

My brother's in a Level 1 & 2 facility which does not house violent criminals; they're held in Level 3 or 4.

His letters have given me a keen insight into prison life, from an inmate's perspective, anyway. The only write up he's ever received is for smoking a cigarette. Seems tobacoo is no longer allowed.

If there's any good news in his whole life it is the possibility that this, his latest and most extended stay will be enough to prompt or force the changes needed to keep him from going back.

Only time will tell.

The crime is illegal trafficing in a narcotic. I know many persons who have financed their businesses by selling pot and later cocaine to bolster their cash flow.

Alchohol, though addictive, is a legal product like tobacco.

I never knew anyone who ran out of booze and switched to meth.

It should be mandatory that Preists should be married.

Then they can divorce their wives, leave their kids, profess their homosexuality, and lead the Episcopalian Church.

Maybe, just maybe, one of his victims was confined in the same prison and sought revenge.

I was thinking the same thing. This child-raper was involved in something like 140 cases *that we know about*. How many others were there who were too afraid or ashamed to come forward, or suppressed the memory, or didn't know he had been charged. I think there is a very good chance that the murderer suffered at the hands of this monster, or some other pedophile priest, when he was a kid. If so, the judge should give the killer a lenient sentence.

A couple of points: The people of Mass are overwhelmingly in favor of death penalty, but the legislature is against it--so it goes nowhere.

Second, don't misuse the term justice. Justice simply means that the accused was provided with the same opportunity to defend themselves as anyone else. Justice refers to the process, not the outcome. In the truest definition, OJ received justice because he was given his day in court.

I am surprised this guy lasted this long in any jail. Ask anyone who's worked in prisons; these types of guys generally dont get into the general population--they are in protective custody. Putting this guy into the mainstream WAS a death sentence.

I disagree. The honest discussion here is informative, if not always beautiful. If everyone agreed all the time, how could there be discussion and growth?

Just by observation and reading, I agree with missyme. Many people don't really need links to agree that marijuana smokers are peaceful and funny and drunks can be nasty, a menace on the roads and everywhere else.

I say we relocate Geoghan's murderer to another prison and call it quits.

I would love to see the expression on my ex-boyfriend's face; they think he killed a fag who fooled with his grandson.

"Does anyone know how he was murdered yet?"

I don't think so, and doubt anyone on this thread cares.

I'm going to go read a book and eat the cheeseburgers hubby just did on the charcoal grill.

But for goodness sake, extracting glee from his demise is trashy, and maybe even diseased.

You're right. It's depraved.

I know it's too late for this man, but the Lord says we should be careful not to gloat or take joy when our enemy falls, least we anger God, and He will help him.
