Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003

Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

I think everyone needs to remember that these pedophiles were allowed by both the hierarchy and the government to continue their perversions against helpless boys.

I think that is the most important point made on this thread. The innocent were not protected and the guilty were not apprehend. The church was too busy passing judgement on their congregations sins, while the state was busy passing the buck.

Judge not, less you be judged.

who's judging? Many people here are expressing approval of Geoghan's demise...

Those of you cheering make me sick, you give conservatives a bad name!

Speaking as a human being, and not as a conservative, I'm glad that the pervert is dead. Deal with it.

"Liberalism infects many aspects of our society"

Yes it does. It affects SO many areas that people can't understand that anyone who rapes little kids is a monster. Instead, they have to morally equivocate instead of bioling the crime down to the fact that it is: a crime against humanity that RUINS untold numbers of lives all te time.

I guess it's easier to try to turn it into a political agenda question.

NOW I'm gonna log off...my cheeseburger and corn on the cob are getting cold.

Massachusetts prisons are well known for being among the "nicest" in the nation.

I've heard Huntsville is pretty bad, I know of a guy who was there for some kind of felony crime (heroin smuggling), he got out but was deported to Mexico and lives in Juarez, he says that he would commit suicide before going back there and while he wishes he could return to the USA and work in a factory here, he won't chance it, he stays in Mexico working for $30 a week at a maquila. I'm not sure what happened to him --- but he says he wishes the feds would have caught him instead of the state of Texas because La Tuna and others like it are country clubs. He's one proof that prisons are deterrants if bad enough.

"In the 'old' days, I believe the fathers of the violated boys would have done the justice...".

Yes, those fathers would have done justice for their children and law enforcement folks would have cheered them on. Today, well......

The church was too busy passing judgement on their congregations sins, while the state was busy passing the buck.

The State believes that pedophiles have an illness that can be cured with the right therapy, the Church believes they are sinners who can repent and become normal. Neither has realized that they are incurable and need to be kept permanently away from children or be physically castrated.

That is truly an exaggeration. Pot is very easy to grow in the good ol' USA. Yes to the government pot is illegal, so is driving drunk cheating on your taxes commiting adultry, all which good american people have done even our politicians. I have know Alcoholics that have drank anything that had alcohol in it like Witch Hazel as well as stealing if they can not get any booze, so I don't think your comment holds alot of water sorry....

Why? Pedophilia cannot be cured!

It sure looks like Geoghan was cured. Death is the only cure (at least, that modern science knows of).
