WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Nutritionists are urging the top 10 U.S. hospitals to ban the Atkins diet, reports said Friday.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine announced Friday in Washington it hopes the hospitals will emulate England's Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, which is eliminating the controversial diet from its menus, fearing a link to kidney damage.

Spicy Cucumber Curry
  • 1 large cucumber, peeled and cut into small pieces
  • 3 to 4  tsp. curry powder or 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper powder
  • A pinch of turmeric powder *Optional.
  • 1 Tbls pure olive or vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp. salt or to taste
Preheat the oil.
1) Add the cucumber pieces and the optional turmeric. Mix well and cook covered on medium heat.
Keep checking and frying every 2 min or so.
2) After it starts to soften a bit add the salt and cook covered further. Cucumber tends to cook fast so keep checking and frying every 2 min or so.
Note: The salt and the cucumber gives out water.
3) After the cucumber is well cooked, add the curry powder and mix well and cook for another 2 to 3 min. The curry powder will absorb all the water and the curry should come together as a mass.
If not using curry powder just add the cayenne pepper powder and give it a toss.
Remove from heat and serve.

I have tried several kinds of cheese on the new Reynold's no stick wrap in the oven, and it works fine. Even American cheese slices quartered and baked in a 400 oven for about 8 minutes makes a great snake. All of them have turned out well, except my first batch which I burned because I cooked too long. The oven method is much better than the skillet.

Funny you would say that, because I burned my first batch too! Actually, it worked out really well. I had some "drippings" from the chicken that I had made (mostly olive oil and garlic) and I used that to fry up a mixture of shredded romano and parm cheese, and used some grated cheese to soak up any extra liquid. It was really great.

Here is what the carb laden diets have gotten us.

That chart tells the story. And it corresponds almost exactly with the increase in processed foods in our daily diet. In particular, processed food that is heavy in refined flour and sugar (usually in the form of high fructose corn syrup) as well as hydrogenated vegetable oils (trans-fats).

I spent the afternoon at my sisters house and met with family members who haven't seen me since early July. They were all flabbergasted at how much more weight I have lost since then. Many of them now weigh more than me (and I was always the biggest one). When the kids were out playing some version of dodgeball that involved running from base to base, I was out there with them, sprinting back and forth all afternoon. Hardly got winded at all nor did I break much of a sweat. This after walking 10 miles this morning.

At the barbeque, all I had was two cheeseburgers without the buns and lots of water. Didn't even bother with beer because I was so busy running around the yard.

Looking at the guts of some of the family members who sat around munching Doritos, macaroni salad, and pastries all day, while discussing their various health problems, I know understand more fully the harm that high-carb diets have done to us. I am very glad that I found a way out of that way of living before I developed health problems of my own.

While I agree the Atkins diet is very dangerous, this effort sounds more like an effort to eliminate all meat consumption (given the comment that we should all eat vegetarian diets) rather than a geniune concern for health. I bet if you research the group you will find it is a left-wing organization rather than a legitimate medical organization.

Pastries, Doritos, and Macaroni Salad are very high-fat foods, so you cannot simply use that as evidence that the sugar in those things are the only things that created those guts and the incredibly high fat content had nothing to do with it.

But regardless, the emphasis should be more on too many CALORIES consumed rather than sitting around and bickering over what calories caused you to get fat. Many people fail at losing weight by lowering fat intake because they then load up on too many carbs (such as eating a bunch of 'low-fat' snacks that are loaded with extra sugar, and therefore, calories). Replacing 1000 calories of fat with 1500 calories of carbs is certainly not going to be conducive to weight loss. It's not because you were eating the carbs that caused you to gain the weight, it is because you ate too many of them -- therefore, too many calories.

Because, in a nutshell, fat doesn't make you fat, excessive carbohydrates do.

So your argument is that fat doesn't actually contain any calories?

Not all at. Fat has 9 calories per gram. Atkins himself had said this diet is not a license to eat excessive amounts of fatty foods, so one still must be mindful of portions.

The big difference is that when your body is loaded with carbs, it's a sugar-burning machine rather than a fat-burning one. And excessive carbs are converted to fat and stored away. As one continues on a high carb diet, the stored fat isn't needed for energy, therefore isn't used up. When a person limits the amount of carbs eaten, the sugar in the system is used up and the body is forced to start burning the stored fat for energy. Weight loss starts to happen.

I'm not a very active person at this point (although shedding 37 pounds has allowed me to become more active than I was when I started Atkins) so I don't eat nearly as much food as I used to before Atkins. The fat I take in helps give me a full feeling and I'm much more satisfied for a much longer period of time. No more cravings, no more sugar crashes, with higher energy levels that last much longer, and a LOT of ailments I believe was due to excessive carbs have or are disappearing. The type of fat in my diet is varied, from hamburgers to fish oil to olive oil for eggs. I still get two to three cups of veggies a day, eliminating the veggies with starches like corn, carrots, and potatoes. For some reason, salmon is great for me!

I also believe Atkins is much healthier because I'm not eating a ton of processed foods as I was on Weight Watchers. Because Atkins is pretty restrictive, Weight Watchers appealed to me (after I had started Atkins) because of the variety of foods I could eat. The problem was so much of the low or no fat foods are very processed, I was consuming a huge amount of carbs, I was continually hungry, and in no time my symptoms flared up. And the weight loss almost came to a halt. All while I was within my "points." I switched back to Atkins and within the week my health improved considerably not to mention I was losing weight nicely again.

I am careful with this diet by drinking alot of water, taking vitamins and minerals Atkins recommends, and constantly monitoring my health and the foods I'm eating. My prime motivation is to gain my health back and avoid the diseases that come with obesity, the weigh loss is a bonus. My own doctor also encouraged me to continue Atkins which is just icing on the cake.

When Cincinatus' blood numbers and cholesterol came up so great, his doctor asked about his diet and took notes. The doctor needs to lose about 40 pounds. Cincinatus has reached his goal - 50 pounds down.

Nothing like the weight loss system speaking for itself! Congrats to him for reaching his goal! You just don't hear the success stories with other diets like we do with low-carbing. :o)

BTW, did your husband bill the doctor for his dietary advice?! lol
