The ten comandments are not a religion but a basis for all civilized legal systems. Try not to compare Religious Symbols/monuments, like Mohammad or Buddha, with historical legal fact.

The current Alabama SC ruling is giving preference to a mode of worship. Namely, atheism.

Good for them. Considering the political situation in Alabama this probably took more sack than keeping it in place.

I'm not a lawyer, but when the supreme court of your state orders a lower court judge to do something, I expect there's one or more laws to back them up.
Hey, don't get me wrong on this. I have no stake in the ground on whether the posting of the 10 commandments causes good or causes harm. But do we *really* want lower court judges to start freely disregarding what the higher courts say. If another Alabama judge started recognising same-sex marriages, wouldn't you want him to toe the line if the higher court told him to stop?

I second that, or at least the building manager never finds the "practicable" time to move it. LOL...due to scheduling conflicts the removal is set for Jan 14th 2016

A lot of hostility towards the ACLU on FR stems from ignorance. This is a case in point.

Well bud that may be your take, but it's my observation of folks dislike of the ACLU is based on the ACLU's hatred of this nation. Are you aware it was started by a well known communist, and his goals had nothing to do with civil rights?
The ACLU's Ramona Ripston is doing her damndest to subert the California Constitution to further her agenda, blocking a legal election process.
You see, it's okay for her to challenge a Constitutional tenet, but it's despicable for the right to do the same thing. I've watched your stupifying posts on this subject. Now you defend the ACLU saying folk's dislike of it comes from their ignorance. I think your true colors are shining through here.
The Alabam Supreme Court justice wasn't forcing anyone to join or observe any church's teachings. No state statutes forced anyone to join a church, observe a church's teachings or be penalized for not doing so. Therefore any claim that he was setting up a state religion is just plain infantile.
This is yet another instance where the members of the SCOTUS pulled a rulling out of their butts.

Can you tell me which of the following cases illustrate the ACLU's subversion of the constitution? Check mate. That was great.
Oh, wait, I was supposed to call you a leftists, sodomite loving agent of the anti-christ./sarcasm
This thread topic has now entered the same category as the WOD, Atkins Diet, Evolution vs. Creationism, and the war between the States threads.

The CHIEF JUSTICE (Moore) is a republican, who WON the job in the last elections AFTER standing up to the ACLU. Most of the REST of the court is made up of DEMOCRATS...so WHAT do you expect...BESIDES, judges cannot disobey the law...they set themselves up for impeacment / removal...and the DEMOCRATS in Alabama WANT Moore removed, so with that in mind, the other justices have allowed Moore to stand his gound without caving.

I forgot to elabotate in #12 that using private funds for such a billboard will not only ensure the display of the Commandments, but will also allow greater control over the placement. Another option would be to purchase private property near the courthouse (if available) for the display. Then, nobody else has a say in the matter.

"Straw man argument. [...] Posting only the times where the ACLU ended up strengthening the Constitution does not take into account the source of Freeper's point of dispute, namely, the cases in which they defended all sorts of anti-Constitutional positions."
In post #28 to which I was replying, montag813 describes the ACLU as a "America-hating terror group" on a "jihad to ... subvert the Constitution"
And this, by the way, was in response to my original claim that much of the hostility towards the ACLU on FR stems from ignorance.
Apparently you agree, since you suggest that in every case listed in post #46 the ACLU successfully strengthened the Constitution and that the only judicious complaint a Freeper could have is that in other cases one might (and many here do) disagree with their position on the Constitution.
Now, if you're suggesting that montag813 is a straw man easily blown over, I might agree with you. But that's evidence for my original claim: there's a great deal of hostility towards the ACLU on FR, but very little of it is well-informed.

They won't. A good witch burning needs the power of the state behind it to garner enough support to get really nasty. Without the deity on their side, it's just murder. Absolutely priceless!
To: OXENinFLA
What's Next will the ACLU now say we have to burn all the churches down as well? Not ALL the Churches, only the ones on government property...and, oh, by the way, all property is under the jurisdiction of the government.
To: ConsistentLibertarian
A lot of hostility towards the ACLU on FR stems from ignorance. No, we are well aware of the ACLU .. they have a long history in destroying anything that is good in this country.

I concur. Time to abolish these judges who think they rule the roost.

Maybe you weren't aware of the many cases the ACLU has taken on specifically the fight for freedom of religion under the US Constitution. Isn't that interesting? Please show me more than ONE where they fought for the rights of the conservative Christian.

A judge's legal authority extends only so far as he's properly applying the law. The 11th Circuit court is clearly outside the bounds of the law, as there's no possible way that this monument can be violating anybody's rights under 14th amendment, which is what Moore has been accused of violating.
