Pancakes on Wednesdays
Yes, we now have banana pancakes....

Welcome to Pancakes on Wednesdays.

Wednesday August 20, 2003

Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and seemingly useless data.

Do not forget to hit the hyperlinks.

We have links, lots of them.

Look it up!

EDACIOUS

Relating to eating.

That, at least, is the literal sense of the word, since it comes from the Latin verb edere, to eat. But even in Latin it had a stronger sense of voracious consumption and that was carried with it into English. It was brought into the language—surprisingly recently—by classically educated writers at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It never really caught on and is now almost extinct, perhaps because voracious is a better established and more vigorous-sounding alternative. The Roman writer Ovid created a maxim in his Metamorphoses: “Tempus edax rerum.” time devours everything. As a result, in its rare appearances the word is most likely to be linked with time. Thomas Carlyle used it in this way when he referred to events “swallowed in the depths of edacious time.”

You know, maybe I am the prehistoric heathen that the Southern Horoscope made me out to be, 'cause if it was mine to do re: the Palestinian Problem - here's what I'd do.

As Sharon, I would make a televised, radio broadcast, and print statement. I would talk with Arafat and Abbas by phone. I would make sure everybody heard me. I would do it in 24 hours.

I would say, "You insist that the latest attack was retribution/revenge for something we did. It wasn't, but for the sake of argument let's say it was. So, we're even. We will do nothing. But, the cease-fire is now in effect. If you or any Palestinian so much as looks cross-eyed at an Israeli....if we find any trace of explosives...if we find a bomb factory...if there is another bombing or shooting or even a stabbing...

The Palestinians shall cease to exist as a people."

I love this poem!!! Wonderful job, bentfeather.

Did I read somewhere that you're having a book published? (The poem triggered a "sorta" memory. Sorry but I've been having a foggy few days again and haven't read all of all threads -- and the stuff I "skim" often goes in one eye and out the other.) ;)

Not to worry! MoJo is eating enough for everybody. All I can hear is slurping and chewing. Now she's eating leftover roast, and has already eaten her Klondike Bar, and is slurping a Mountain Dew.

Brings back a funny memory...while on vacation, Mrs. HJ found out her sister has a new gas stove...and we use electric!

She had so much fun trying to light it...the spark-starter worked for everyone but her. She's used to the burners cooling down slowly, and adjusts the heat accordingly. Can't do that with gas! And she kept turning the burners down for low so far that they went out...and wouldn't start again!

Well, I now know what we aren't getting the next time we move!
