Hannity station went dead for about 20 seconds. Said he had never seen anything like it.

I read that book in 1978! I have a copy, but are they still selling it in stores? It was indeed a good one.

I would have thought that they would have had measures in place to deal with this sort of thing, since it caused problems in the past. But then, electricity is a funny thing...What everyone seems to forget is the circuit breakers worked, in the '65 outage. Much easier to repalce a few miles of fried line, and reset the breakers than it is to repair/replace generators (hours/days vs months/years)

Speculation Time:
It will be very interesting, culturally and politically speaking, to see whether this turns out like the '65 blackout in NYC (where everyone banded together and helped each other, and crime went DOWN ... rather like on 9/11) or more like the NYC blackout of 1977 when the city went up in flames because of, well, the results of twelve years of hardcore liberalism.
What will win out when the sun goes down? The spirit of 9/11 and of eight years of Rudy Giuliani, or the spirit of David Dinkins, Michael Bloomberg and Abe Beame?

Where are the FREEPers who were making jokes about France and their power problems? Where are they at now?
Can we blame it on the Canadians at least?

Sorry about the double post ... my puter down here in Florida seems to be lagging a bit ...
My brother works in Manhattan ... NYU-Cornell Med Ctr. I just tried calling but only got a recording to call back between 9am and 6pm (humm ... it's only about 5:15 now). He lives in Rockaway Beach ... a good 25 miles away ... I guess he'll have a long walk home tonight.

Joe they aren't looking at cause per se but rather trying to figure out how to get things patched back together with some bubble gum, duct tape and whatever else they have.... Just restarting the power plants will take some time.
They at some point will begin the process of looking at which relays tripped, when, what sequence and then they will begin to pinpoint the orgin and why...
Lets hope they don't drag down the rest of the grid when they try to bring it back up.

This blackout will generate some nice business for the consultants in the electricity industry. I have to look on the "bright" side. Pun intended. We don't need consultants - we need plants and wires (and get rid of those pesky marketers that keep clogging up the grid to save a half a cent per kilowatt-hour).

ROFL! You must be Mr. FourPeas long-lost sibling. I'm sure he was doing something similarly forbidden with TV knobs, radio knobs and/or vacuum tubes.
