Georgia is in the eastern grid, so it's theoretically at risk. If the operators are on their toes, they can prevent a cascading failure, and my guess is that they already have.

Power flickered on and off for a while up here in Albany. We began to down servers when power was restored...figures! No cell phones, though.

Re Philly City Hall evacuation -- probably due to HEAT/humidity with no a/c and windows that don't open.

Thanks for the reasoned response from direct experience. However, I don't trust how well the planning was actually worked out. One station or transformer alone shouldn't do it...theoretically.

Locally, a couple stations are down - Fox 5 has no picture at all and channel 7 ABC has no sound - and the others, CBS & NBC are reporting on the outage. I'm guessing this is leftover residue from 9/11. They finally got their backup transmitters up after losing the WTC transmitter site, but never finished installing backups for the backups. OOPS!

6 minutes ago Add Top Stories - Reuters to My Yahoo!
BOSTON (Reuters) - Power outages struck major U.S. and Canadian cities on Thursday, witnesses said, although it was not immediately clear if there was a link between the breakdowns.
Power outages were reported in the New York metropolitan area and Detroit, as well as in Toronto and Ottawa, witnesses said.
We're having a heatwave in Chicago but now outages I know of.

"Now saying people are panicking in NYCI doubt that. My daughter called from NYC 45 minutes ago and said everyone had left the office buildings and were standing calmly in the streets. The hospital she works at has their generators running.
