Memphis Episcopal Bishop Don Johnson has apologized to gay and lesbian members of the West Tennessee diocese as he explained his vote against the denomination's first openly gay bishop.
At a meeting last night at Grace-St. Luke's, Johnson stood crying and said in voting against the election of V. Gene Robinson, he didn't mean to reject gay members of the church.
Johnson was among 43 bishops who voted against the election of Robinson to lead the New Hampshire diocese. They were the minority.
Johnson says he voted "no" because the church hadn't done the theological study needed for it and because the worldwide Anglican Communion will be strained by it.
Most people who came to listen chose not to comment, saying they hadn't yet decided the issue for themselves or weren't comfortable talking about their feelings.
Those who did comment generally upheld the denomination's decision.
Justin Tisdale listened to Johnson, then said Robinson's sexual orientation should make no difference in his church leadership role.

My gaydar says that Pastor Bill is, well, gay. So, of course, he believes that a gay Archbishop is a "good thing."
I'm getting so sick of this gay stuff. Biblically and biologically, gay sexual relations are unatural--whether or not the two gay people are "married" or unmarried. Why can't gay people just start a "church" specifically geared towards their own unhealthy and yucky (IMHO) sexual practices instead of co-opting established religious organizations that for years have warned members of the physical and spiritual dangers of unsanctioned sex? Oh, yeah, like the Islamofascists, the radical gays want to shove their doctrine down our throats. (Yeech. No pun intended, it was the only way to describe the all-gay-all- the-time stuff I see and hear in the media/culture these days.)
I used to believe that so long as a gay person didn't make a big deal of his or her homosexual preferences, I'd leave well enough alone. Love the sinner, hate the sin. Is it just me or is it getting to the point where I want to scream out "just shut up, do your perversions in private if it makes you happy, but don't come crying to me if you pick up some truly nasty disease because of your perversions and, above all, let me be free to not condone your sexual lifestyle or teach my children that having homosexual sex is "healthy" and "natural" because of my own religious and personal beliefs.
Yeah, I know some gay people with whom I volunteer with and/or provide services to me. So long as they don't make their "gayness" an issue...or preach to me or my children that "gayness" is natural, wonderful, "a gift from God," and spiritually and physically healthier than being celibate or plain, old fashioned heterosexuality, I won't preach back at them.

JESUS DEFINES MARRIAGE: "And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore, they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." -from THE BIBLE: Matthew 19:4-6

I think that ECUSA has been so marginalized over the years that most conservative members must left early on. Afterall they are down to 2.1 million from 3.5 million at their peak (may have been more than that). Any minister having to apologize for not voting for the active homo Bishop must be getting heat from a not so conservative congregation. I am not sure how much schism will develop now that most of the sanity departed in the early yearsYou may be right. Yesterday after mass we met with out Pastor and about 14-20 members and our other two priests. Our pastor went on to tell us he disagreed with the South Carolinas Delegations vote. (SC voted NO)Only 6-7 in the group voiced discussed with the election, the others seemed to have been "previously invited" to insure we were put down as "Homophobes" and intolerent. Even our other two priests commented about the church being about the New Testament and forgiveness, and that the old testament was basically old hat. The church has ceased to be about GOD and more about itself. What a pity
I quit the ECUS yesterday

In the original article from the
The (Memphis) Commerical Appeal Tisdale refers to the "elevation" of bishop Robinson as a positive thing for the "progressive community."
"The main reason I joined the Episcopal Church is because it allows people to have personal interpretations and is open to new ideas," said Justin Tisdale, 28.
Tisdale, who was has been attending Calvary Episcopal Church for five years, converted from the Seventh Day Adventist Church because he found it too conservative.
"It wasn't accepting of homosexuals," Tisdale said. "Now, I'm free to express my beliefs and to ask questions."
I'm sure that this fine example of enlightened thinking also views the Bible as a historical document and that picking and choosing what sins he wishes to flaunt and which ones he wants to adhere to are part of the church doctrine.
I'll stick to the churches I attend, where sins are defined, and are not up for intrepretation.

Johnson stood crying and said in voting against the election of V. Gene Robinson, he didn't mean to reject gay members of the churchLet's adjust that phrase and see how good it looks:
Johnson stood crying and said in voting against the election of V. Gene Robinson, he didn't mean to reject kleptomaniac members of the church
Johnson stood crying and said in voting against the election of V. Gene Robinson, he didn't mean to reject pedophilic members of the church
Johnson stood crying and said in voting against the election of V. Gene Robinson, he didn't mean to reject wife-beating members of the church
I thought so.

"I'm sure that this fine example of enlightened thinking also views the Bible as a historical document and that picking and choosing what sins he wishes to flaunt and which ones he wants to adhere to are part of the church doctrine."They seem to think the Bible is an EVOLVING historical document, open to whatever interpretation they find convenient to justify whatever sin they commit. Our churches have become Clintonized.
