Sounds like the "oil" was K-Y jelly.
This seems to me that this is related to the 'conservatism = mental illness' theory that's making the rounds. In this instance, it seems the congregation has been taking a biblical stand on matters for some time and the church leaders see it not as defending the faith but as symtomatic of a conservative mindset.
Kudos for the congregation and to hell with the bishops.
Conservative feeling???? No, it has been torn by the church redefining God's word to negate what it clearly says and means!
"Washington Bishop John B. Chane told reporters that the decision to confirm Mr. Robinson's election had been "centered in prayer"
Prayer to who?
"It was a relationship that was blessed at some point."
I dare say, not by God.
So many churches have become nothing more than social clubs, so what does it matter who runs things? I just wish they would be honest about it.
The numbers on the membership rolls does not the body of Christ make, or as Corrie ten Boon said, "just because a mouse gets in the cookie jar doesn't make him a cookie." We once had a priest that was fond of saying that you won't find God in church unless you take him with you. Wiser words were never spoken. God commands His people to have nothing to do with the one who calls himself a brother yet is wallowing in his sin (my paraphrase), and if God's people are absent from the church, then so will God's Holy Spirit be.
"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." (Matt.7:22-23)
Oh, haven't you heard? Robinson claims its not his problem.
Statement by Robinson:
"Robinson said he did not feel responsible for anyone leaving the church. "Clearly I've been called to play a role here. But if anyone leaves the church it's because they've chosen to, not because they've been asked to or forced to. I don't hold the future of the Anglican church on my shoulders."
Obviously you are an unenlightened fundie. All of us here at The Future Church of The Created God The Creator are diligently working to re-create the Church and God in our own image. The quaint concept of "sin" which, for most people, brings up feelings of guilt, shame, and anxiety, will be replaced by the word "mistake". Our research shows that 50% more people feel threatened by the word "sin" than they are by the word "mistake".
Essentially, what we're doing here at the FCOCGF (pronounced Fucocoff) is getting rid of the patriarchical and hierarchical relationship of God to man. We want people to see the Holy Spirit as their pal. We want people to understand that God is broadminded (despite Christ's words on the Cross ("Father, Father, why have you judged me...?")
The FUCOCOFF BIBLE will be available this Winter Holiday Season ....
Expect this to happen soon after the current Bible is ruled "hate literature" by the courts.
Things are moving on schedule.
I hope I'm wrong, but I don't expect them to lose a significant number of members. This ordination is not an isolated event, but the result (and not the final result) of years of corruption. How did this guy get to remain in the priesthood after ditching his family and running off with his butt buddy? And what's going on in the minds of these 40-odd church leaders who voted for his becoming a bishop?
The "priest," or whatever, of our largest local congregation of Episcopals is a lesbian. When my wife informed me of this (we have some friends who used to go there), I asked, "What, don't they read the Bible?" Of course I instantly realized what a stupid question that was.
The leaders of that church have been boiling the frogs for a long time. The ordination of the homo bishop is just the latest uptick in the temperature. It is a slightly larger change in temperature than usual, but since most of the frogs are already dead, they won't notice. Hopefully, more of the not-yet-dead "frogs" like Mr. Randall and his congregation will notice and jump out of the pot, but I don't expect this to happen in large numbers. Again, I hope I'm wrong.
"But those bishops are no longer required to obey the Bible it seems."
I liken it to the submission of a woman to her husband "as is fitting in the Lord." While God gives authority to the man in being the head of his family, that order only works if the man, in turn, submits himself to the headship of the Lord. A man has no authority to cause his wife to sin nor is she compelled to submit to his authority outside the Lord. The same is true here. The hierarchy of authority in the church is established for its edification and the priests are subject to the bishops, but the bishops have no authority to compel the priests to sin nor are the priests bound by God to the authority of such bishops.
