I liken it to the submission of a woman to her husband "as is fitting in the Lord." While God gives authority to the man in being the head of his family, that order only works if the man, in turn, submits himself to the headship of the Lord. A man has no authority to cause his wife to sin nor is she compelled to submit to his authority outside the Lord. The same is true here. The hierarchy of authority in the church is established for its edification and the priests are subject to the bishops, but the bishops have no authority to compel the priests to sin nor are the priests bound by God to the authority of such bishops.
