Justice League turns lefty?
self

Posted on 07/31/2003 7:08:07 AM PDT by TheBigB

Okay, for any who have seen my opinions in the past, you know that I'm an avid comic book collector. For a few years now, my favorite title has been Justice League, or JLA for short. The newest issue, #83, came out yesterday. It was, without a doubt, the most unvarnished left-wing piece of Bush-bashing propaganda I've ever seen. The baisc set-up is this (*WARNING*--SPOILERS)...President Luthor (yes, in the DC Universe, Lex Luthor is President of the United States) has decided that the nation of "Qurac" has acquired or constructed Weapons of Mass Distruction, and has decided that he must attack before they can be used (how coincidental). The Leaguers (really, only Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman in this issue) are unconvinced. Batman (badly mischaracterized by writer Joe Kelly) states that to attack a sovereign country without UN authorization would violate international law. Luthor attacks his (and WW's) statements as "unpatriotic." Batman even punches out a police officer in broad daylight who was keeping a group of war protesters from boarding a train...the policeman said there was a fire on the tracks. Batman doesn't believe him. Superman says he checked and it was true...there was a fire. Batman says, "I know." That's it. 'Nother words, he punches out the officer because he wanted to. There's more barely-disguised Bush-bashing until the end when...this is true...it all turns out to be a dream of Superman's. Yes, a dream. This issue had no story, no continuity, no connection to anything else in the entire DC Universe. It was, purely and simply, agit-prop Socialist propaganda. And apparently, the entire thing didn't go over very well. If you check the JLA message board at the official DC site, you'll see plenty of readers, both cons and libs, who were outraged by the over-the-top sermonizing:

http://dcboards.warnerbros.com/web/messages.jsp?topic=35291731&board=jla

Please check it out and feel free to comment (IF you've read the issue). And there is a place to send messages to DC, which is conveniently down. I think they're getting lots of feedback they didn't expect.

I have also noticed that Marvel's titles have become a bit preachy regarding the Left's agenda. Especially about homosexuality.

I think the fact that lib's have stooped to the point that they are having to argue their case in comic books is fitting.

Just another reason I gave up collecting current comic books and am concentrating on plugging holes in my Silver Age collection...

Comics used to be patriotic. Having acquired more than a few Golden-Age era books, I love the flag covers, the ones with heroes punching out Hitler, Stalin, or Tojo, etc. But nowadays even Captain America has turned lefty. I'm hoping this was a onoe-shot thing that Kelly got out of his system. if it continues, I won't buy another issue of JLA.

If you want to read a serious One World left-wing claptrap comic book (and who doesn't) read Stormwatch. The UN super-team are the good guys and the US is always doing something shady that requires UN intervention. Puke.

Personally, I'd vote for President Luthor. You know he's for tax cuts and a strong national defense.

*Sigh* How frikken sad. I used to collect Marvel, but DC stuff rarely, usually Batman titles. Batman punch a cop? Not typical in my memory.

The lefties will ruin anything in their slimey path. Salt the slugs.

News Item - Dick Gephardt responded to President Luthor today by saying that he has merely expressing "machismo" and had no real reason to invade Quraq. Furthermore he poked fun at the President's baldness and offered the use of his eyebrow pencil supply. He will debate later today with Democratic hopeful Bob Graham on whether Quraq even exists at all and why they are slightly aroused by male superheroes in tight body suits.

I used to collect mostly DC myself...I got into it when I received some 1960s books from my Uncle when I was but a sprout. :) Mostly LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES and SUPERBOY, but some SUPERMAN and other stuff mixed in. LSH was always my favorite title ('til I got ahold of CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN).

I loved the narrator's voice on those "Superfriends" cartoons:

"Meanwhile, back in time, Lex Luther and his insidious gang prepares another diabolical plot..."

My all-time fave is Doom Patrol - just got the last one to complete the run this Spring. Also love FF, JLA, Superman and especially the Legion of Super-Heroes in Adventure - great comics!
