Hundreds turn out for History signing
BY HILARY HILLIARD ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

Standing at Sam’s Club in west Little Rock, hundreds of Hillary Rodham Clinton supporters waited eagerly Friday to see the woman many of them believe will be president.

They stood in line for hours hoping for signed copies of Clinton’s latest book, Living History. She showed up 20 minutes early at 4:40 p.m.

Many of her fans wanted more than a signature from the Democratic senator from New York — they wanted to chat with her and touch her hand.

"She won’t run in 2004, but she’ll run [someday]," said Naga Pannala, 21, as she waited for a wristband to guarantee a spot for Clinton to sign her copy of Living History. "I’ll vote for her."

Behind Pannala in the 400-long line, Dicky Simpson tossed in his opinion.

"She’s pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes," he said, arms folded across his chest. "It’ll be 2004."

Clinton, former first lady of Arkansas, says she’s not a candidate.

"I always tell people that I am not running, but I am hoping we will have a change in the White House," Clinton said in a telephone interview Thursday. "I’ll be working hard to elect a Democrat, and hopefully we’ll get that done in 2004."

Clinton said she came back to the state Friday partly because of her fans, who have opinions on her marriage, her politics and her ambitions.

"They offer opinions on everything. That comes with the territory," Clinton said. "They tell me what they relate to in the book."

Clinton, who has rarely returned to Arkansas, said Friday that the visit was a welcome one.

"I really don’t know how long it’s been," she said of her last trip. "Too long."

Though she’s been away from the state, Clinton said, she’s run into several Arkansans on her book tour.

"It’s so terrific to have people from Arkansas coming to New York, to California," she said. "It’s like a huge extended family."

She will remain in Arkansas for part of today to do another signing at That Bookstore in Blytheville after touring the Clinton Presidential Library site in Little Rock.

"I’m anxious to see the progress that’s been made firsthand," she said. "I’m so sure that building the library in Arkansas, alongside the river, is going to be a tremendous attraction for tourists all over the world."

The $160 million library and center is to open in November 2004.

So far on her tour, Clinton estimates, she’s signed about 20,000 copies of her memoirs. Writing so many signatures, often in slots of just an hour or two, causes the senator a little pain.

"I plunge it into ice water after I finish a book signing," said Clinton, who also uses an elastic brace on her hand. "I must confess, my signature at the end of the book signing is a little less legible than it was at the beginning." Clinton signed hundreds more books Friday afternoon.

When she walked toward the book-signing table at Sam’s Club, 5-year-old Sophia Speiden called out, "Hi, Hillary Clinton."

Clinton acknowledged the child with a smile and a quick nod. Sophia’s parents, Sherri and Doug, brought Sophia to the book signing to take home a memento.

"Daddy, what did Mrs. Clinton say to me?" Sophia asked, tugging on his shirt.

Her father turned to her and said, "She said you were very cute and that she loved your earrings."

"I got them at a yard sale," said the beaming 5-year-old.

Friday morning, Sam’s Club didn’t hand out the 900 wristbands for Clinton’s signing as quickly as expected.

Fans formed a line at Sam’s at 5:30 a.m. By the time the store began handing out wristbands at 10 a.m., the line snaked around the front of the store.

In an hour the line thinned out, and Sam’s Club employees stood at an unsteady folding table, fumbling with a pile of about 50 extra bright purple wristbands.

"Really, I’m thrilled these are left," said Karyn Larko, a spokesman for the event. "Now people won’t have to wait in the sunshine any longer."

Some of the store’s customers who lined up for wristbands Friday held brightly colored umbrellas to shield them from the heat and sat in beach chairs to save their feet. They were grateful when Sam’s Club gave out bottles of Ozarka water.

"They brought out a whole buggyload," said Nancy Green of Star City, who arrived at the signing at 6:30 a.m. and was at the front of the line.

During the three-hour wait to enter the store, she and her friend Paula Boren chatted about politics and how they believe Clinton will continue to surprise Americans.

"This is history in the making," Boren said. "And since I’m a history teacher, I like to know I was involved in it."

People without wristbands also showed up, forming a separate line. They were a little less talkative but just as political.

"I don’t think the time is right for Clinton to run for president, and I think she knows it," said Denise White of Little Rock. But she added, "She’d be great. She’s not some little cookie cutter."

People without wristbands were able to get their books signed, too.

John and Julia Hall of Arkadelphia drove to Little Rock for the signing. They waited in line for three hours without wristbands but emerged with signed copies.

They said they planned to go out on the town in Little Rock afterward.

"We’re going to celebrate getting the signature," Julia Hall said.

Clinton, wearing a black dress and a blue sweater wrapped around her shoulders, spoke briefly with visitors about how happy she was to be back in Arkansas and to have the support of so many fans.

Outside the store, a small protest looked more like a Saturday Night Live sketch.

Susan Ferguson of Pine Bluff paraded along the sidewalk in a black beret, blue dress and knee pads. She held a sign that said, "Honk if you think Hillary should never run for president."

"I dyed my hair brown for this — I’m actually a redhead," she said. "Had to look like Monica [Lewinsky]."

Ferguson joined about a halfdozen other protesters from freerepublic.com — a Web site that promotes conservative values.

"We don’t like people that lie," she said, "and Hillary’s a pathological liar."

Several drivers honked and screamed at the protesters. Some snapped pictures of Ferguson with Doug Merritt, who sported a Bill Clinton mask and twirled a cigar. Ferguson also set up a display with a black and white striped jail suit and a sign that said, "Hillary’s new pantsuit."

When the final autograph was signed, Jolanda Stewart, a spokesman for Sam’s Club, said about 750 people had come through the store for the signing.

"It’s safe to say she signed 1,100 to 1,200 books," she said.

Great job. I'm sure she knew you were there because typically the adoring throngs make some comment to her about "those people" outside.

Oh, better than that. She actually SAW us at the second FReep. I guess there wasn't an easy avoidance route. I'm sure she wasn't happy about it.

I hope Republican strategists are analyzing how to defeat this very dangerous person in 2004/8.

One thing is clear: she must not be attacked personally.

Instead, Republicans must attack the mess that was left in 2000 by the democrat administration :

1. A recession
2. A stock market bubble
3. A weakened defense
4. Overreaching intrusive government
5. Medicare run amuck by lawyers
6. A dangerous tendency towards loss of sovereignty.

What Americans remember is that their 401k's were wiped out on Clinton's watch.

Hillary Clinton will defend herself against attacks of having no concern for America's military by pointing to her membership on the Armed Services committee.

Hillary Clinton will defend herself against all personal attacks by acting as if the attack was over the top and that she has been unjustly victimized.

The Republicans that debate her must remember one thing: never ask Hillary a question that gives her the opportunity to spin an answer. In fact, in my opinion it would be best not to ask her any questions at all, rather ignore her. Liberals (and she is the alpha liberal) hate to be ignored, and the best weapon against liberalism is indifference.

Another good weapon against Hillary is to make her so angry that she vents in public. But beware she will have others plan scandals, fabrications and distractions all for the purpose of keeping the focus off her opponent's strengths.

Another good strategy is to make her repeat herself. Recall the Healthcare Express with buses heading across the country in the same repeated manner as the first term campaign. It made people think that they were being manipulated, and they were.

Also remember there is a difference between being smart and being cunning. Both involve having superior vision but with different motivations. Hillary is cunning, not smart.

I see a Republican candidate winning easily who is serious and focused on what they will do, not on attacking Hillary. Attacks on Hillary play to her sleazy tabloid publicity and for a reason that escapes most conservatives, this type of distractive publicity brings out sympathizers to her agenda.

Clinton, former first lady of Arkansas, says she’s not a candidate.

Notice the contraction of that pesky little word "is". In the context of this statement that little word makes a world of difference. No one doubts she is not presently running but many believe she will run.

This could happen (just a personal dream).... Bush/Cheney ticket easily wins in 2004. In the meantime Condi Rice runs for gov. of CA and wins the recall election. In 2006, Our Hero, Cheney steps down and Bush puts Condi in as VP. WooHoo, the Queen of Class runs against the Queen of Crass (or the big a$$, which ever one prefers)!!!

Your personal dream....sounds great to me.

BTW I've noticed a great deal of Condi bashing by the liberal media this past week....more reports that try to tarnish her image over the '16 words' flap...they must be beginning to connect the dots that Condi could be the one to take on hitlery!

Of course they love to bash anyone connected with Bush but their desire to undermine her credibility seems more vigorous.

Yes, those Clintons can really twist turn a phrase. And that article is full of inconsistencies, revealing statements, minor inaccuracies and stuff that you can't miss between the lines.

I saw a copy of "Treason" at Walmart the other day on the same display as a stack of "Lying History". I covered "Lying History" up with "Treason".

O.K., does anybody know the scoop on where these 2 books are on the bestseller lists? On Amazon.com, Ann's book is #8, Hitlery's is down to #21. However, on the New York Time's top 5, Hitlery's is #2 and Ann's doesn't appear in the top 5. What gives? How could there be this much disparity? (I bought my copy of Ann's book yesterday at a B.Dalton and noticed there were MANY more copies of Hitlery's book available on the shelf than Ann's.)

Beats me, but then I don't trust the NYT. We were just at our local Walmart which now has Treason so I did a little "modification" to their display as well. Treason is quite easy to spot, but there is NO Lying History showing. Hehehe...I know. I'm bad, but somebody has to even things up a little.

How in the bejeezus can you talk and drink Kool-aid at the same time?

This man has seen even more service to our nation than I have, and you owe him, and my bretheren-under-arms, your gratidute and an apology!

I thought so too. I was actually looking around to see if the person might be there, but of course, had no idea how to know who it was! lol I did have a big smile though! I was just pleased that piece of fiction was kind of off the beaten track while "Treason" was front and center!

Thanks for your service and your comments. I'm still having loads of fun with the Infinite FReep in Columba MO every Saturday. It's always good to be across the street from the leftist peaceniks because my being there ticks 'em off.

7. Osama bin Laden

9. No progress on mid-East peace, after 8 years of coddling Arafat.

Hillary will call every attack (whether on her record as a co-president, Jr. Senator, lawyer, all else) a vicious personal attack. There will be nothing we can say that she will not declare a vicious personal attack. But we cannot let that stop us. I know from past behavior during her previous run for carpetbagger from NY that the leadership in the (R) party will be afraid to call it like it is. That job, if it is to be done, will likely fall on us. I am disappointed in the spineless behavior of most of our (R) politicians and leaders.

You bet she isn't! She's a sociopathic liar, she'll cut with an ax or worse! Hillary isn't for women any more than her husband is, they just use them.

Grow up. I'm not smearing you. I'm not even talking about you.

I'm referring to those that suddenly found it benficial to put flags on their websites, stand in front of flags when trying to sell me a car during a television commercial, tell me to salute a flag when considering my insurance provider, or pen a poorly worded and musically deficient song about kicking ass because it will sell more records.

Nothing happened on September 11 or since to make me more patriotic than I already was, and I wager the same is true for you.. I always have saluted the flag, and I always have put it out on holidays, and I always have saluted veterans, and I always will. And I always grieve for those that do not return, and I will always work to find ways to minimize those numbers.

Putting a stupid bumper sticker on my car, or wearing a special lapel pin changes nothing. And mindlessly supporting what I consider to be bad poicy does not make me more patriotic.
