He killed himself by attaching a hose to his car exhaust pipe in his garage, if I remember correctly - it would have been mid-'80s.

Yes, SF is pretty. Much of my family still lives there or in the vicinity, so I go out to visit fairly often.

On the down side, every time I go out there, the only thing I notice is how grey, cold and windy it is. Maybe Dan White was just depressed. It's unfortunate that he blamed the Mayor and a crazed political-queen councilman for his problems, though.

Different situation because he was in his home. Have you ever been to lower Manhattan at 9:00 a.m. on a Wednesday? I bet there are more people on the streets just within eyesight than there are in most of the cities, towns, or villages across the Country.

And this means that the Costitution of the United States of america should not apply. Actualy the last time I was in lower manhattan on a weekday was Sept 7, 2001 when I was at the WTC for a meeting. Now just why does the presence of the number of people in Manhattan have any bearing whatsoever on concealed carry by law abiding persons? The population density has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with these laws never has never will. At one time I had an out of state NYC carry permit for a .38 spl revolver. In NYC the gun to be carried had to be the one on the permit. I note I never once in NYC even ghad to show teh firearm I was carrying except to a police officer when I went in a police station and showed my permit first.

The vast majority of those who are armed will never have to draw their sidearm. Concealed carry permit holders are carrying for that one time when they are threatened with deathor great bodily harm.l I note I have an aquaitancew who is an international attorney who was stabbed in at the corner of Wall and Church at noon on a Tuesday. Had this person been armed as he was ourtside of NYC he would not have spent several montsh recovering.

No he would not have fired wildly nor wouldit seems based upon statistics any other law abiding gun carrier. New York City's laws are a disaster regarding guns. Every increase in gun control laws causes an increase in deaths and injuries from crime (see John lott's research).

Apparently Mr. Askew was going to be a Democratic candidate for the city council.

Select the hyperlink on the middle-right column which says "More about Othniel Boaz Askew, Andrew Kirtzman reports." to see a video where the murderer's politics are discussed.

It finally got to me. I moved away one fine July day when the wind was howling and temp felt like winter. The other thing that happened on our first year in SF was the Jim Jones Guiina mass suicide by Kool Aid. For a city so health conscious, it was surprising that Kool Aid and Twinkies were so popular. Between White and Jones we were a tad spooked to put it mildly. Now the citizens are volunteering to die of AIDS. Maybe there's something in the water.

*Was* going to be. He joined Davis' campaign today, just to be able to kill him in City Hall, I guess.

I had no idea Andrew Kirtzman had gone to CBS; he's been on NY1 for about a decade.

Yup, for the present.

It's been 22 years, and the shine is definitely off the penny now.

Oh, I thought you knew.
I don't know squat about NYC local politics.
I'd peg him as a regular Democrat.
Thanks for the insight... I think. :)

I don't know squat about NYC local politics either, but from reply 846 above:

Brooklyn congressman Major Owens calls Davis a "reckless" man who has tried to build "a cult of personality."

Now I KNOW Major Owens is a first class kook.
So while I may be wrong, I take this statement to be a + in James Davis' favor.

Just a little clarification. Our version of SWAT is actually called the Emergecy Service Unit and has been around since the '20's, when they used to drive around in fire truck-type vehicles with Thompsons and messed with gangsters. They're actually a lot better trained than the average SWAT team in that they can do so much more. They can fix potholes, break into stuck elevators, scuba dive, do urban search and rescue, pick locks, open up wrecked cars and do almost anything in addition to the usual SWAT stuff. I've seen them in action a couple of times and they are the very best. They also took the bulk of our casualties at the World Trade Center.

Score this one for the Detective Bureau. I'd bet that it was one of their guys on the security detail for the Speaker that took the shot.

Major Owens IS a first-class kook.

But he has tons of competition.

ok, thanks for the ping....

I wonder what went on in the guy's head...they were supposed to have been friends.

And that weirdo, Bloomberg, relaxing the security at city hall...where councilmen (some are thugs) and their "guests" can bypass security checks...What a jerk.

Bloomberg relaxed security at city hall where the press, councilmen and their "home boy" guests do not have to go through the metal detectors....Bloomberg is a very strange man.

Gotta agree with you about Fox covering the screen. I nearly went nuts during the Iraq shock and awe cause you couldn't see much thanks to their screen coverings and tickertapes!

I posted that comment right after I heard it on the radio. PhiKapMom corrected it in a later post. The version I posted and that I heard on Hannity was incorrect.

Check post #709.

I was trying to post quickly, right after I heard that report on the radio. Didn't catch the mistake until after it was posted.

I'm glad you thought it was funny. Actually, I hate to make mistakes. Especially like that.

Is the gunman's name Mohammed?

Yet another anti-Muslim knee-jerk assumption that turns out to have been wrong. Again.

No, it's Abdul. The FBI say there is absolutely no connection to terrorism.

Looks like there was no connection to terrorism, as per usual.
