CRAWFORD, Texas - Democrats are launching a television ad that accuses President Bush (news - web sites) of misleading Americans on the nuclear threat from Iraq (news - web sites).

Republicans urged broadcasters not to carry the ad, set to be aired initially Monday in Madison, Wis., then elsewhere; they called it "deliberately false and misleading."

The Democratic National Committee (news - web sites) has been raising money through an e-mail campaign that began July 10 to help finance the ad, which sharply questions Bush's veracity on Iraq's weapons.

The ad says: "In his State of the Union address, George W. Bush told us of an imminent threat. ... America took him at his word."

The video shows Bush saying, "Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."

The ad continues: "But now we find out it wasn't true.

"A year earlier, that claim was proven false. The CIA (news - web sites) knew it. The State Department knew it. The White House knew it.

"But he told us anyway."

Republicans claim the ad improperly quotes Bush because his entire statement was: "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."

DNC spokesman Tony Welch said: "With the British in there, the president's information is still false and misleading. It is exactly what the president said."

Some Republicans have argued Bush's statement was technically accurate because it attributed the findings about uranium to the British

This Dem ad sounds verifiably slanderous. Is there no recourse? Could the Republicans run a counter ad that claims the Dems are on the record seeking to completely cancel Social Security? Sure it's a lie ... but apparently lying on political ads is now OK.

That remindes me, I saw Doug Hattaway on TV this morning claiming that because of the war in Iraq, Saddam's WMD's are more dangerous to us now than ever.

How can these 'rats simultaneously claim that there were no WMD's while claiming that we're in more danger from those non-existent WMD's than we would have been had we not gone to war with Iraq, and not be called on it by the press?

We can't go to war because the threat isn't imminent enough becomes we were lied to because Bush claimed that the threat was imminent, and There are no WMD's becomes we can't go to war because Saddam will use his WMD's agaisnt us becomes there were never any WMD's becomes we're in more danger now than ever of Saddam's WMD's.

Sure. They should run an ad threatening to sue the DNC for more than it is worth if they put the ad on--and follow through. And they should demand that the FCC enforce the law against broadcasting a false signal. A false signal which in this case is targeted to weakening the administration's ability to prosecute foreign policy, for political gain. Political gain is not an excuse for lawbreaking; else al Qaeda was perfectly within its rights (as indeed some treasonous types have suggested on-air) on 9/11.

Failure to respond is weakness, no less dangerous to the Constitution than x42's lax policy toward al Qaeda was. The FCC's function in broadcast is forbidden to the government, in any other medium. The FCC is constitutionally suspect and its decisions should be subject to court scrutiny, probably strict scrutiny.

You heard what FOX did - right ..?? After they had spent the day re-running the 2 latest hit ads on Bush for free (as news) .. it was announced FOX had done some checking and found out the dems were only spending $45,000 to run the ad in D.C. and NY markets. FOX opted not to run the ads as news anymore.

Of course, the ads weren't news to begin with - but at least FOX realized they were being USED TO RUN THE AD FOR NO DOLLARS.
