I told them they could post reviews and announcements about their books and a link to their websites, but not to post ads, attempts to sell them and not to spam them.

Free to the next 10 people who pledge, a free video of Bill Moyers's "The Power of Myth"...
Oops, sorry...I thought this was a PBS pledge drive. Speaking of pledge drives, please do what you can for FR. (hint, hint)

I wasn't aware we had a plague of this. I'd only seen references to things like cafepress for artwork that Registered has done. Or if someone asks where to buy such and such, somebody furnishes a link. Is that the kind of thing you mean?

What if someone asks where to get something.
We were discussing some of the finer vehicle crash protection decals and often the question arises: Where can I get one of those?

Does that include charity solicitations?
To: CyberCowboy777; Jim Robinson
Logically speaking (if you can believe that!!),
posting specifically for solicitation for purchase is different then offering advice in the middle of a thread as to availability of a product related to the subject of the thread.
I tink. But, I'm not JimRob. :-)
What say you Jim?

I think we should have some kind of ranking system here...
Tenure, number of posts and maybe some losely applied ratings (members rate each other) system would established to see who is a nuisance or not.

BTT. Fortunately, I'm not trying to sell anything, nosiree. I'm from Nigeria, you see, and I'm a former government official with access to a secret bank account...

Does this mean I can't post the directions to my yard sale?

Do not advertise, or attempt to sell or solicit. It's plain enough. Should need no further explainations. Every day one or more newbies gets nuked for this. Links to cafepress, ebay, et al, for the purposes of offering merchandise for sale are not welcome here. If we allowed this, we'd be wall-to-wall spam for t-shirts, books, stamps, coffee mugs, etc.

I can't speak for Jim, but that's never stopped me from posting befor. It's NOT a nuisance thing. It's a liablity thing. FR holds it's self out as a non-commercial site. This came up in the law suit from the LA Times/ Wash Post.
We geed good Karma points in a court of law if we truly are non-commercial...
