GENEVA - A World Trade Organization arbitrator Friday gave the United States until Dec. 27 to repeal a U.S. law giving American companies the fines collected from foreign firms they accused of unfair pricing.
The decision follows an earlier ruling - upheld on appeal - that the law breaks international trade rules.

Just eliminate the income tax and go to a national retail sales tax. That would eliminate this issue entirely.

World bank to help Iran with environmental programs
Sunday, June 08, 2003
Tehran, Jun 8 - Manager of the project on promotion of environmental administration Yousef Hojjat said here on Sunday that the world bank will extend a credit of $24 million to promote Iran's environmental management program, IRNA said.
Speaking at a gathering of environmental managers, he said that the project aims to develop the potentials of department of environment (doe), tackle air pollution and call for the need to apply climatic laws and quality standards.
"The project will deal with air pollution in the cities of Tehran, Isfahan, Mashhad and Arak, water pollution in Karoun river and protection of environment," he added.
Hojjat pointed to attempts to tackle all types of pollution and environmental demolitions to materialize article 50 of the constitution, protect the environment, comply properly with the laws of the first to third five-year development plans and the law on preventing air pollution.
Manager of the environmental project said that drawing up proper national strategies in line with reduction and control of air and water pollution can promote the potentials of the environmental management system.
"Provision of appropriate data and bringing the pollutants under control are required to materialize such an objective," he noted.
The official said that establishment of air and water pollution measurement stations will provide a continuous progressive data bank where the quality of air and water are registered.
"Such a data bank can eventually be equipped with devices capable of registering and transferring data, handling statistical calculations and having access to national and international networks," he added.
He reiterated that the level of air and water pollution in all areas and highly-populated regions, the impact of polluting sources and level of pollution at the surrounding areas will be specified in such stations

Amen.
Hopefully Bush will go for it, but it would be a surprise coming from anybody, even Reagan.

I'd like to know one reason why the injured companies can't obtain compensation for the subtrifuge of their foreign competitors. This is madening!
The foreign competitors dump product, US companies are adversely affect. The foreign firm is fined. The US companies should be compensated. EOS
This just doesn't make sense.
I they don't like what they consider unfair advantage given to the company they tried to drive out of business by using unfair practices, they don't implement those unfair practices in the first place.
Now the offending companies basicly have an insurance policy that protects them from using unfair practices to run US business out of business.
If they calculate they can afford to do so, they implement the illegal practices, drive the US business under, pay the fine, go on with a lock on the market and raise their prices since they've killed competition.
It's this irrational mindset in international relations that has always made me object to the WTO. Europe dominates, we eat week old cake on every issue.
Isn't it nice to see Mexico is a part of this sheist!

We have been told often that these trade agreements will not jeopardize our sovereignty so it looks to me as though our leaders should just tell the WTO to take a hike.

But then that's where push comes to shove isn't it. Now our dear misleading leaders can't spin this away. They were wrong, likely lying their posteriors off.

Hey, I'm all for a trade war.
The U.S. imports more goods from Europe than it exports back to them, so a trade war hurts them more than us.
In short, bring it on!

Unfortunately, the treaty provisions in the Constitution is big enough to drive a Mack truck through, and somebody did.
The dollar devaluing going on right now is cracking Germany's acorns. Of course, they get to crow about how the Euro is so strong but their workers are having a little trouble exporting.

No, trade is not part of the nrst, but trade is affected by the nrst....
By eliminating the income tax, our exports would be sold at about 23% less overseas
By implementing a national retail sales tax, imports would have a 23% tax slapped on them at sale.
