Actually, before he gets wacked too hard...they have a deal. Anytime a member wants to be away, he or she just finds a member of the opposite party who is going to vote the other way on a bill, who also wants to be away. They both agree their votes would cancel each other out, they notify their party leaders, and they can take off.

For members up for reelection this is very common. I imagine he mainly takes advantage of this practice.
