Madonna's Sales Tank After One Week (Big Belly Laugh Altert)

Madonna is in trouble. Her American Life album drops from number 1 to about number 8 this week, selling a paltry 65,000 copies. That's down from 235,000 the first week.

Of course, the whole record business bottomed out last week, with the top 10 albums selling fewer than 750,000 copies. Rapper 50 Cent (search) regained first place, and two albums connected to American Idol did well enough to make the top five. Additionally, Cher (search) continues to astound with her greatest hits collection.

Madonner is now officially OLD and BUSTED!

Way past her experiation date, it may be time to rekindle her love affair with Dennis Rodman.

I can just see it; Him in his white wedding dress and her in her designer camo's stutting around town posing for pictures. What a lovely sight to behold!

How long you think it will be until "M" and her hubby Guy Ritchie are splits-ville? Shouldn't it be happening just about now? How long can poor Guy put up with her stunts and bad attitudes? "Swept Away"? More like "Swept Under The Rug".

LOL LOL LOL! Won't be long now before she's doing Vegas - opening for Mr Wayne Newton!

May she fade into obscurity, and end up as a parody of herself!

Your wish is being granted. Her increasingly desperate attempts to stay in the limelight will not be pretty.

Or perhaps people are just guffawing at such an ostentatious publicity whore and conspicuous consumer as Madonna nattering on from her safe perch about success and fame not being everything.

I've been following pop music for over 30 years, ever since I got my own transistor radio for Christmas in 1971 (yes, the one with the little white earplug that went in one ear). Own hundred and hundreds of CDs and albums. There used to be a time when I knew virtually every song in the Top 40. In fact, I can still name title and artist of practically every song that made the Top 40 in the 1970s after hearing just a few notes.

So I can say with some authority that there have never been a time since at least 1971 that Top 40 music has been so consistently awful. It is virtually unlistenable. You have to go to a country station to hear somewhat decent pop music these days (but that's a story for another thread). I have been a subscriber to Billboard magazine since 1979 because I am fascinated with charted music and following my favorite music as it climbs the charts. But I'm thinking of cancelling that subscription because other than the country charts, there is virtually nothing about the other charts that interest me anymore. There are no good Blues charts or Classical charts in Billboard, which are the only other two genres of music I listen to these days (besides Country) with any regularity.

Top 40 music today really, really sucks. That is the reason CD sales are off lately, not file-sharing. In fact, file-sharing would help the music industry sell more albums if they had anything worth buying besides catalog music (which they would sell a lot more of if they dropped the price-point).

You know, of course, it won't be HER fault - it ummmm let's see...Hmmmm... oh! It was the fault of those hackers that hacked her web site and put MP3s of her entire album on her web site... yeah yeah, that's it - it's someone ELSE's fault!!!!

Does this mean her fans prefer her as a "slut"?

That's all she ever had going for her. What can she fall back on now? To have any kind of career now that her looks are gone and the slut act looks ridiculous would require she have some talent but that was never there.

Wouldn't surprise me ---but I can't imagine anyone but the tackiest parents wanting some old whore to write stories for their kids. I guess some feminists would buy them ---but then they abort most of their kids.

You hit the nail on the head! All the screaming about "illegal file sharing" and downloading are a smokescreen to the poor quality of material produced by the music industry.

I think there is a more sinister plot here -- the music industry is trying to force their garbage to our youngsters. How can anyone actually believe that RAP/HipHop is good? Where is the music? Where is the new material for those of us over 35? The RIAA assumes that those who are over 35 don't even buy records. It's not that we WON'T buy them, there just isn't anything appealing!

Hubby and I listen to an oldies station - - we constantly say to each other, "gee did we realize the music was THAT GOOD way back when?" I have to agree, today's stuff is a horror, with a very few exceptions. Sorry......but I'm going back to the golden oldie vault o' wax.......

Can I spin something for you folks??

Madonna is just the Tiny Tim of the 21st Century.

She is. It's been proven you can take a pile of elephant dung, call it art and people will come and admire it.

Amen to that about Tiny Tim! Though he had a sad life, he was a treasure. When he showed up in the late 60's, there was a 1920's - 1930's revival in US culture (fashions influenced by the film Bonnie and Clyde, songs like Westminster Cathedral and many more examples). It opened up my then pre-teen eyes to history. These days there's little or no awareness of that history. Maybe it's not hopeless for a new generation - Spongebob Squarepants used a very catchy Tiny Tim version of an old song in an episode. (Great to read a mention of Count Petofi in your tagline, by the way - talk about obscure references!)

Dittos!

I had the opportunity to interview Tiny a couple of years before he died, and not only was he a walking musical encyclopedia, he was a completely guile-less, honest human being who cared deeply about music and entertaining people. He was also a very kind and religious man - the anti-Madonna, in face!

Oops. That should have read "The anti-Madonna, in fact".... I mean, these days their faces are looking more and more similar, aren't they ;-)

The writing has been on the wall for a long time. Record companies have been corrupting the playlists of radio stations and MTV. Then the gangsters pushing their products. Death Row Records for instance. If you are a new group you don't stand the same chance that the bands in the earlier years stood. Leftists don't know the importance of making money.
