04-15-03- I was going to write an Op-ed today to go with our weekly Hall of Fame and Hall of Shame awards.

Then Tim Robbins spoke to the National Press Club today.  I've recorded it for your listening disgust.  To say it's beyond the pale is an understatement. 

He has declared war on the 77% of the people in this country who support our president, this country and our troops.

Here is the audio. 

Hollywood-Hero needs to say, one more time for the record, free speech does not mean free of consequences. 

Freedom to choose what we watch, rent or buy does not equal a blacklist.  It's called capitalism.

Actors are free to speak their mind, oppose the war, malign our president.

We, who disagree with their blanket dismissal of what most of America believes, are free to dissent.

We are free to decide NOT to watch a film, buy a CD, or rent a video. 

That's where our power is and that's what they are really afraid of.  The buying power of the American public, the ones who allow them the lifestyles they enjoy.

There is no Hollywood Blacklist as they infer by bringing back this new form of McCarthyism in the guise of a Republican Administration.

This isn't even a boycott, it's about our country, our freedom to choose who we give our largess to in the form of our buying choices.

If Hollywood can't take the heat of their own convictions, perhaps they should find another line of work that would better suit them.

Don’t be fooled

Tim Robbins does not believe he is being silenced or he would not have bothered to shave, shower and drive to the press club! He is much less concerned about being criticized or silenced for his political views than he is about being remembered for having come down on the wrong side of history.

He is trying to shift attention from his support of a dictator. A dictator so ruthless that he once arrested, tortured, killed and then left the dismembered remains of his political rival on the doorstep of her parents.

His rants complaining about the three week horrors of name calling he has endured ring hollow given his love for his self generated political limelight.

For 8 long years I lived with the label; mindless right wing extremist wacko.

So unthinking was I that no less than the White House called me inhuman and nothing more than part of a machine, a vast right wing machine.

Tim Robbins is not concerned about the loss of his first amendment rights but rather he is concerned with attempting to restrict mine.

He and his ilk have and continue to come down on the wrong side of history, they registered their support with the Stalin and Idi Amin side of history.

I heard clips of his speech and it was absolutely pathetic...so full of drama.

It was nauseating as he tried to paint a picture of this horrible world where dissent was not allowed and wasn't it just awful that Helen Thomas didn't get to ask a question at a press conference? Good God...the man is a lunatic.

King's wife has had FAR too much influence over him. I couldn't believe the blatant bias in "Insomnia". He used to be a great writer, transcendent of the genre itself. Now he's "quit" after releasing a ton of GARBAGE in recent years.

Although...I still want to read the end of The Dark Tower series. :p Also kinda can't hate King because he looks exactly like my father, so much so that he (my father) was stopped in Maine and asked for his autograph a few times (even faked one once just to make me laugh :p).

That being said, I agree with your sentiments. Guys, by letting these celebs get you SO angry -- you're letting them win. So just relax a little. They had no influence on Bush; they WILL have no influence on Bush; they had no influence on general poll #s; they WILL have no influence on general poll #s.

However...we're all only human, and the fact that these b4st4rds whine 24/7 about free speech from outlets that "common folk" such as you and I would never have a shot at getting. When was the last time YOU were invited to speak at the National Press Club? I've been to some of the NPC events, and that's probably closer to that mic then the majority of people on here -- but I certainly wasn't allowed to espouse my views (I was deeply behind enemy lines, working at Clinton's inaug. via a school program that went horribly awry -- I'm writing a book on it someday, the story is almost unbelievable, even to me).

Anyway, yes, sometimes we let them get to us too much, but sometimes, man, you just gotta VENT, and we don't have open mics at the NPC meeting to do it...we have FR & talk radio (and Fox News, which is why the liberals are targeting all three institutions).

I can't stand this "protesting" from a lot of clebs. Give me a break. They are just concerned about the almighty dollar. If we have a long-drawnout war, that's less people going to the movies. It's always something with you people. You think that just because you are famous, you can "buy" whatever you want. The Shawshank Redemption has always been one of my favorite movies. Now, I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to watch it again. I'd probably find myself cheering when Tim's character gets repeatedly raped by the bull queers.

I think you need to watch the movie again. What do you think those bull queers (as Red referred to them) were doing to him? Tim's character (Andy) even asked Red if it would do any good for him to inform them he wasn't a homosexual, to which Red responded they weren't either; you have to be human first.

Not that it's really important, but you're either watching the wrong movie, or you missed a huge portion of it.

Same here.....Somehow, I'll never again think Harrison Ford is the brave, patriotic hero that I've seen him play in many films.
He crushed that for me by his recent statements, and sitting in the front & center row at the Academy Awards with a big cheshire grin as Michael Moore insulted & maligned our President.

The same with so many many others that I nominally liked or watched.

They've gone a step too far.
