Daytime TV to Get First Lesbian Kiss

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Daytime television viewers -- considered to be among America's most conservative audiences -- will see their first on-screen lesbian kiss next week, ABC television said on Monday. The kiss will take place during the April 22 episode of the Emmy-award winning soap opera "All My Children," making what ABC said would be a first in the world of daytime television.

It comes in a scene featuring gay teen character Bianca Montgomery (Eden Riegel), who came out as a lesbian in 2000, and her new friend Lena (Olga Sosnovska) who "in a moment of truth and true love ... comes to terms with her feelings."

"All My Children" has tackled a number of controversial topics during its 33 years on the air including AIDS, abortion, drug abuse, racial bias and teenage alcoholism.

"The theme of 'All My Children' from the beginning is the belief that, as God's children, we are all bound to each other by our common humanity despite our many personal differences; that it is our failure to understand and respect those differences that causes most of life's pain and suffering," said the show's creator, Agnes Nixon, in a statement..

"The Bianca story is our latest effort to dramatize that belief," she added.

Those were some very scary quotes and statistics. I am going to have nightmares tonight. I almost wish I hadn't read that, but we do need to be aware of what is happening to our society. That was way too freaky for me. There are some very, very crazed people out there.

I believe evil has been unleashed on the earth and we are in for it. Damn, reading that scared me worse than the scariest horror movie ever made. I am shaking after reading that.

I don't think this is the first time that "All My Children" had a homosexual storyline! A number of years ago; there was a woman named Ellen on there(Kathleen Noone). She had a grown young daughter on there, who was a lesbian. She had gotten married, I think, and divorced. Then, she got involved with a woman that she was aquainted with on the show.

However, they portrayed it in a sensitive way on the show then, (it wasn't glorified) and although disturbing; it didn't get as far as showing them kissing, or more.... That's why I'm surprised that 'that' storyline was not mentioned on there! Although soap operas were for a long time, on the cutting edge of current trends, they never got so explicit until the recent 5-10 years or so.

I guess they just can't leave well enough alone! And I thought that in order for people to view the programming with the really 'dicey' stuff; they'd have to look for it on cable, not anymore! I really don't watch soap operas anymore; so it doesn't matter!

See post 84. There actually was a lesbian storyline awhile back on "All My Children". Didn't get as explicit, though!

It seems to me that to expect the viewer that watches Ricky Lake and network soap operas all day long to suddenly seek intelligent news and switch to Fox at 6pm is too much to ask.

" . . . in a moment of truth and true love . ."

The truth is that 'true love' does not involve sex nor does it 'seek its own.' True love is divine and outgoing, closely resembling parental love. Physical or sexual attraction is of a different quality, seeking its own.

For example, "NAMBLA" (pedophile protection and advocacy group) knows this better than anyone, and cloaks its propensities with the mis-nomer, . . Man/Boy Love Association -- obscuring the truth that it is a man/boy SEX association.

Take away the physical sexual benefits or pleasures of what most people think love involves, and 'this thing called love' would disappear in a heartbeat. There's your test.

God is Love and Love is of God. When I say, "I love you," (in the human sense) am I not saying that I want to be your 'god' and I want you to be the object of my affection and sexual satisfaction? Or possibly, I want you do be my 'god' and I want you to bestow upon me your affection and to satisfy my sexual needs?

'I am attracted to you' (between adults, of course) seems to be an honest, casual, non-demanding, non-pretentious, up-front statement and requires no false response or forcing another into playing an un-wanted role. One has the choice of saying either 'thank you,' or 'I am attracted to you too,' -- leaving the door open for a continuing friendship, regardless of what may evolve.

To invoke 'love' (God) as a door-opener is a grab for power over the other. Honesty is the best policy, for it maintains equality and allows for free-choice in a relationship. If equality is maintained, I am pursuaded that both men and woman will respond to the true nature of their gender. Abnormal sexual relationships and/or brutality reveals the in-equalities and imbalance of the power structure in a relationship, i.e., slave/master, which can never be justified by calling it 'love,' IMO.

To be sure, human love is a reality. But never let the words serve in lieu of righteous action.

(This is a condensation and does not include the completeness that morals, ethics, commitment responsibility and matters of conscience would call for. Thanks for reading and please forgive my pontificating. I rarely get involved in this kind of stuff, but I just can't buy this kissy crap they are going to show on network TV under the guise of 'true love.'

Oh barf.

Lesbianism is a foot in the door to de-stigmatizing homosexuality in toto.

Once the social stigma is gone and it is (at least partially) accepted as a normal practice and "alternative lifestyle" then the job of indoctrinating children will become much easier.

The Lord will not like this and our nation will suffer as a direct result of these kinds of cultural shifts.

People here will laugh at that, but it will come to pass all the same.

Hrmm, odd. I didn't hear about any raining of fire and brimstone, no earthquakes, no plagues of locusts...

One would think that from the outcry that this was going to happen. Personally, I just thought that it was a lot of undeserved hype.
