Ron Silver: "The end of my days as a prominent liberal"
C-Span | 4/12/03 | Scothia

Posted on 04/12/2003 10:49:52 AM PDT by Scothia

Actor Ron Silver, addressing the Pro-USA and pro-troops rally in Washington DC today and responding to his introduction as a "prominent linberal" said "I think you've seen the end of my days as prominent liberal."

"Peace at what risk? Peace on whose terms? Peace for how long?" he went on. "There are worse things than war. People who think nothing is worth a war is worse."

The enthusiastic crowd cheered as Silver evoked Elie Wiesel and the lessons learned through the horrors of Nazi Germany, enunciating the reasons for America's humanitarian intervention in Iraq.

Following Silver, Linda Chavez remarked that she herself was a former liberal, and invited Silver to join the conservative ranks. "We ought to have a support group for ex-liberals," she said, laughing.

All you need to do to renounce liberalism in all it's forms is adopt an appropriately pessimistic view of human nature. Everything else flows from that.

Whoa Cowboy. I'm a real conservative, no neo, paleo or libertarian. Your definition is the fake assumption of the "progressives". Conservatives want to conserve institutions not the status quo. We want to conserve what is good and change the rest. We learn from history to find what works and what doesn't. We don't live in history.

I understand and respect your position and use of the term conservative. I use the term when I describe myself, but I usually add the caveat that I mean by that I am a "cynical liberal." I understand the distinction between conserving institutions, not the status quo, but believe that this is a nuance added by people in the movement, and not in keeping with linguistic traditions. In many cases conservatives have been the defender of the status quo, regardless of the consequences in human terms. The crown loyalists in 1776 were the conservatives of their time. It depends on the institutions you are defending. It also depends on whom you let set the definitions.

It goes along with the forced definitions foisted by the leftist media of conservatives being on the "right," of therefore being fascists, or "bad," and people on the left being progressives, or "good." That is why I remind people that Hitler and Mussollini were socialists, true leftists, who differed with their partners on the left only when it came down to who would be in charge of the march to conquer the world (Hitler and Stalin's non-aggression treaty being the origin of that thought for me).

Even though I cherish the label conservative, as it has come to be known and embraced in modern times, particularly by Ronald Reagan, I still resent the implied cubbyhole that Dan Rather is trying to put me into by using the label on me and mine, as well as the implied superiority he claims for himself by embracing his definition of the term "liberal."

Maybe it would be easier if I started just referring to myself and those I agree with as the good guys and pointed to those who oppose us as the bad guys? Nah, that would be too judgemental and not PC .

Best

Kevin Costner is clearly NOT very bright; as a prime example, he CANNOT ACT. He is (or was)just another pretty Hollywood face. I don't view him as being particularly dangerous vis-a-vis any political statements he may make.

Israel WAS God's chosen people.

It still is. However, the Israel in question is the Israel of God, the followers of his Son, Christ.

Notice that none of the quotations you posted are from the New Testament. Many things changed with the coming of Christ. Among them is the identity of God's chosen people.

33 "Listen to another parable.

(30) There was a landowner who (31) PLANTED A (32) VINEYARD AND PUT A WALL AROUND IT AND DUG A WINE PRESS IN IT, AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to vine-growers and (33) went on a journey.

34 "When the harvest time approached, he (34) sent his slaves to the vine-growers to receive his produce. 35 "The vine-growers took his slaves and beat one, and killed another, and stoned a third.

36 "Again he (35) sent another group of slaves larger than the first; and they did the same thing to them.

37 "But afterward he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

38 "But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.' 39 "They took him, and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 "Therefore when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine-growers?"

41 They said to Him, "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and (36) will rent out the vineyard to other vine-growers who will pay him the proceeds at the proper seasons."

42 Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures, '(37) THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone; THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD, AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES'? 43 "Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people, producing the fruit of it. 44 "And (38) he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust."

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they understood that He was speaking about them.

IMHO, the words of Jesus clearly show that he was proclaiming a change in the status of the Jews AS A PEOPLE.

Illbay, I usually don't agree with you. But there is a first time for everything. Good post, and a great way to sum it up. People tend to overlook the fact that Israel was 12 tribes. I am pro-Israel, but not because the Jews are God's chosen people.

Despite what seems to me to be the obvious point of the NT with regard to this. Israel was God's Chosen People. They lost that position (as a people) due to their rejection of the Messiah.

Not quite........

They have been rejecting GOD from WAY before that!

NIV Exodus 32:8
They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, `These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.'

NIV Deuteronomy 31:19-20
 19.  "Now write down for yourselves this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so that it may be a witness for me against them.
 20.  When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I promised on oath to their forefathers, and when they eat their fill and thrive, they will turn to other gods and worship them, rejecting me and breaking my covenant.

NIV Deuteronomy 32:15
Jeshurun  grew fat and kicked; filled with food, he became heavy and sleek. He abandoned the God who made him and rejected the Rock his Savior.

NIV 1 Samuel 8:6-7
 6.  But when they said, "Give us a king to lead us," this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.
 7.  And the LORD told him: "Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.

NIV 1 Samuel 10:19
But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your calamities and distresses. And you have said, `No, set a king over us.' So now present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans."

NIV 1 Samuel 12:22
For the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his people, because the LORD was pleased to make you his own.

NIV 1 Kings 19:10
He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."

NIV Psalms 118:22-23
 22.  The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone;
 23.  the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.

NIV Proverbs 1:20-31
 20.  Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares;
 21.  at the head of the noisy streets  she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:
 22.  "How long will you simple ones  love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
 23.  If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.
 24.  But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand,
 25.  since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke,
 26.  I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you--
 27.  when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
 28.  "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me.
 29.  Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,
 30.  since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,
 31.  they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.

NIV Isaiah 5:24
Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the LORD Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel.

NIV Jeremiah 6:19
Hear, O earth: I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their schemes, because they have not listened to my words and have rejected my law.

NIV Jeremiah 8:9
The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and trapped. Since they have rejected the word of the LORD, what kind of wisdom do they have?

NIV Hosea 8:3
But Israel has rejected what is good; an enemy will pursue him.

NIV Luke 7:29-30
 29.  (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus' words, acknowledged that God's way was right, because they had been baptized by John.
 30.  But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God's purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)

According to Matthew, as quoted in post 92, the Jews rejected and killed his messengers for centuries without losing their status as his Chosen People.

When they rejected and killed his Son, that was the Last Straw, not surprisingly. End of status, as a people.

Notice that none of the quotations you posted are from the New Testament. Many things changed with the coming of Christ. Among them is the identity of God's chosen people.

Yes, we were ALL pre-destined to come to God, through belief in His Christ.  The Book of Hebrews does the best job of explaining this to the 'Jews'.  The Gentiles were ALWAYS included: do your OWN search in the OT to see this.

The MYSTERY is this:

NIV Romans 16:25-27
 25.  Now to him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past,
 26.  but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all nations might believe and obey him--
 27.  to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

NIV Romans 11:13-29
13.  I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I make much of my ministry
 14.  in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them.
 15.  For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
 16.  If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches.
 17.  If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root,
 18.  do not boast over those branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.
 19.  You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in."
 20.  Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid.
 21.  For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.
 22.  Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.
 23.  And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
 24.  After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
 25.  I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.
 26.  And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
 27.  And this is  my covenant with them when I take away their sins."
 28.  As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies on your account; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs,
 29.  for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable.

NIV Ephesians 3:1-11
 1.  For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles--
 2.  Surely you have heard about the administration of God's grace that was given to me for you,
 3.  that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly.
 4.  In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,
 5.  which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets.
 6.  This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.
 7.  I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God's grace given me through the working of his power.
 8.  Although I am less than the least of all God's people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,
 9.  and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.
 10.  His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,
 11.  according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The term 'Chosen People' has been replaced with the term 'Body of Christ'.
