I used to watch combat. As I kid I thought the M-14 was the greatest looking weapon. Then one day I'm walking though a gun show and there one was. I couldn't wait to pick it up. I asked permission and picked this sucker up. I nearly fell over. It was a very heavy weapon. I had held comparable weapons. By comparision it was by far the heaviest. All of a sudden those years of thinking I wanted to own one left me instantly. Combat, the TV series, is set in WW2. They did not have M14s in WW2. They had M1 Garands (wt empty 9.5lbs), M1 Carbine (wt empty 5.5lbs), M1A1 ("Tommy Gun") (wt 30rd magazine 12.5lbs), BAR (wt 15.5lbs).
A loaded M14 weighs less than an empty M1 Garand, but does not sacrifice much in the way of energy delivered downrange.
M16/AR15s are a different type of beast.

The correct way to load the enbloc clip into the M1 Garand is using your thumb to press down on the clip against the follower. To avoid getting the 'Garand Thumb' you place the blade of your hand (the part of your hand you use to give karate chops) against the op rod. This way, your hand is holding back the op rod, and you can't slam the bolt shut on your thumb.
After you put the clip in, and it clicks into place, you then rotate your thumb out of the way, and let go of the op rod. If it doesn't go forward, you can help it with the heel of your hand, but your thumb should be already out of the way.
Anyway, everyone should go sign the petition anyway. The M14s in storage, are ours. We, the taxpayers, paid for that stuff. Why should we pay yet again to get them destroyed. Just sell it to the citizen-soldiers. ;)

Your screen-name is particularly apros-pos' You apparently are incapable of going to the website and examining the recommended process. But then again, Ican't see how you would have need of a serious weapon in your double-wide.

Just as another aside, USMC didn't have a lot of Thompsons, Motly we had Reising .45ACP sub-guns. There were a smattering of Thompsons, but mostly gotten from doggies who wanted a beer.

M14s are classified as machineguns. Are you sure?
YUP.. as originally mfg, the M14 was select fire, however most of them at some point had the select fire removed, and the selector hole in the frame plugged. Ok, now they are semi, right? WRONG... the ATF says "once a full auto, always a full auto".
There are the civvy manufactured ones that are built as semi (Springfield Armory) and the rare ones that are pre '86 and thus transferrable.
That is another piece of stupid firearm legislation that probably affects less than 2-3% of all firearm owners, because all it has done is create a price war on transferrable full auto firearms. Pathetic, worse than EBay/

Your name would suggest some affinity for the AR-15/M-16... Fulton does those, too. I've handled, and fired, some of their products. Absolutely top notch. Pricey, though.

You're not constipated I hope.
Note to others, do NOT tell the DI you are constipated in hopes of going to sick bay.
The cure is a table spoon of Wisk laundry detergent.
In difficult cases the addition of a cigar and a canteen cup of hot water works wonders.
The reason Marines are so proud is just having survived boot.

Thanks for the comments and the links. I appreciate it.

I've been taught the "thumb drill" -- my husband trained on the Garand before the M-14. We got one from the CMP also - nice one with matched parts, still in the Cosmoline. Daddy has a Garand that he brought back, along with some Iron Crosses, helmets, etc. etc. He also brought back a number of Lugers (his company took the surrender of the German XLV Army Gruppe) but he sold them all before I was born. Ah, well!
