Firefight at Baghdad airport - Tunnel to Tigris River foundReuters | April 3, 2003 Posted on 04/03/2003 2:02 PM CST by HAL9000
NEAR BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. forces advancing on Baghdad are fighting Iraqis dug in at the capital's main airport on Thursday evening.
Reuters correspondent Luke Baker, 33 km (21 miles) south west of the capital with the engineer units of the 3rd Infantry Division, said military sources told him on Thursday a 3rd Infantry task force was fighting Iraqis dug in to defend the airport.
No further information was immediately available on the progress of the battle, but sources said U.S. forces had discovered some sort of tunnel system under the airport and one tunnel led all the way back to the Tigris river.
Baghdad's Saddam International Airport is about 20 km (12 miles) southwest of the centre of the sprawling city of five million. Sporadic U.S. artillery and rocket fire had been launched towards Baghdad since darkness fel

I wonder if tunnels like this one provide a way to outflank the defenders of Baghdad (if there still are any.)
To: PhiKapMom
More of them than the subways of NY.
Perhaps this will be Saddam's legacy -- a ready made subway system that no one knew existed. Where better to beat the heat of a Baghdad summer day than underground? Mind the gap!

Sounds like the dreaded "storm drain" defense!

I figured the same thing but according to what CENTCOM said they are all over under Baghdad!

I am reminded of the eternal echo from beneath O'hare.... Is this airport the one where, after walking ten feet, you have to step up, then down? I never understood why those barriers were there. What about people in wheelchairs?
To: PhiKapMom
Well, I hope they're not booby trapped with WMD.

To deal with these tunnels and bunkers, we need a new kind of attack vehicle - something like a cross between a tank and a tunnel-boring machine. I think I saw one once in a Jules Verne movie.

The United States Army and United States Marines, sir, are the Defenders of Baghdad. I think you refer to the Butcher of Baghdad.

Brian Williams was talking to General Meigs after a discussion with a General at CENTCOM that said there are tunnels all under Baghdad. More of them than the subways of NY. This find of the airport tunnel fits in perfectly with that report. This layman's biggest fear has always been that the Iraqi's would retreat to these tunnels. I worry about the reported relative lack of resistance. Hope the bad guys don't use the tunnels to double back behind our guys then use WMD.
To: Oldeconomybuyer
Hmm.. who's right.
Another thread has an article where it said our boys entered the airport with little or no opposition.
And now Roto-rooters has us in a "fire fight".
It's soooooo confusing. LOL
