Illbay is no doubt goofy (collectivists tend to be that way), but his above post is intended to be satirical. And is at least as humourous as many other attempts on FR. And so he should get credit.

I get a kick out of seeing how many people actually take statements like "basketmaking and beadwork" seriously.

feel free to make your own Chief Shockandawe with a fine native american making pottery while weaving, making baskets, and doing beadwork passing the time away aboard a Black Hawk waiting to drop down in the middle of the night looking to rescue a POW or some such thing...I am sure you can capture the fine contributions of the Native American Culture in a Chief SHockandawe graphic

No, I'm not kidding. Why not give it to public domain like the hundreds of other pro-Troop/America graphics circulating? Is there a marketing plan in the making?

I'm into allowing the creator to profit from his creation if he so desires.

It's the American way.

If the illustration were simply placed in the public domain, it could be altered -- for example, into an antiwar poster -- and we would have no recourse to object to the misuse. By copyrighting it, such a counter-intended use can't be done without either getting my consent (which wouldn't be granted for such a use) or by subjecting the mis-user to legal liability, thus inhibiting such misuse.

I'm a working freelance writer without any other day job and I am not independently wealthy.

I paid an up-front fee to the artist, Billy Tackett, to take him off other paying work, so I could get the illustration in a timely manner. I'm also out of pocket for expenses incurred in setting up the website -- my total up-front out-of-pocket expenses adding up to around $200.

I've set up a virtual store to sell T-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. featuring the Chief Shockanaw illustration, and theoretically I get to keep around two bucks off each sale, but nothing has sold yet. If a hundred of these items sell I'll reach break even.

Believe me, I could bring in a lot more money selling anti-war T-shirts to antiwar demonstrators. So I'm not in this for the money.

The prospect of breaking even seems so remote to me right now that I haven't even thought of what I might do if it turns a profit. If I can pay my bills that month from other income, I might make an appropriate charitable contribution but, honestly, if I'm behind the 8-ball, I might use the money to pay bills.
