Lynch Shot Iraqi Soldiers
The Washington Post ^ | April 3, 2003 | Susan Schmidt and Vernon Loeb

Posted on 04/02/2003 7:40:30 PM PST by John H K

Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

Nobody even knows what really happened, and some of you are making this girl into a mythological heroine. I read where she was driving one of the trucks that got lost, so for God's sakes, you don't know that she wasn't the fool that got them lost in the first place.

You guys can worship the ground this young lady walks on, but not me. I don't have anything personal against her, and I'm very glad her Daddy has her back, but she had no business anywhere near a combat zone. Her, nor any female.

This is the kind of horror that Bill Clinton wrought and how he has further destroyed the military. This is his legacy.

Maybe she did try to "fight to the death", more likely she didn't-- I'm not sure how well Army basic training prepares its future supply clerks and cooks for ambushes. If anyone finds a witness to her account, please ping me.

Funny that the young American soldier is "More likely" to be lying than not. Why?

>>>PS: I would love to have her as my honorary sister.<<<

Tonight Jessica Lynch is every patriotic American's honorary sister!!

Its up to us to make sure that she knows it...and it lasts until all the anti-American nay-sayers can't stand it anymore.

Are you talking about this thread? The first comment I saw after the excerpt was "proud to be an American". And I didn't see anyone advocating women in combat, either.

The first partisan comment was post 8.

Considering we had female POW's in GW I, I'd say you are wrong.

I should have said less likely to be in this position because the rules were changed during the Clinton administration. But that has already been adressed by someone else about an hour ago.

You clearly haven't read this thread thoroughly if you are saying no one here has advocated women in combat.

Yes, there was a scene with a train in the movie. Denzel and Lou Diamond Philips are in that scence. I don't want to spoil the movie for those who might not have seen it.

Why are you people beating up on me? You think your sheet smells better than mine? Well, it doesn't.

I think you are all making this girl into a bogus heroine. She, and no female belonged anywhere near a combat zone.

So, you think its okay for women to get into combat, be taken hostage. It makes your day, evidently.

Well, its not good for the country. Consider that.

I have to question whether or not the capture of a single male soldier would have caused the brass to risk the lives of these special ops troops for the life of a single man.

Is this what you know of military service? Have you served in the military?

The only way the general could have been further from the DMZ was if he had been treading water down around Okinawa. His little exercise was taking place just a few miles north of Pusan.

I have nothing against Marines, but in this case the only danger was drunk taxi drivers.

She did have business there. She wanted to serve, and her country sent her there. That was her business for being there. It doesn't fit your narrow view of where women should be, but you aren't running things, nor do I expect you will ever get your way on this one.

Don't mistake your world for the real one. She had very good business to "be there". And no one is doing anything here except trying to celebrate a good news story. She is as much of a hero as anyone else who has come through fire in this war. She's been tested, and it appears she passed.

I'm sure that entire unit fought like tigers - some even to their deaths. But I gotta agree with Destro on this. Story is too pat and everyone wants to believe it. It just doesn't ring true. Unconfirmed rumors, un-named officials etc.

Who is acting like a little girl now? I said I was against women in combat but this particular woman evidently went down fighting and I admire any soldier, woman or man, that does that because, to tell the truth, I don't know what I would do in that situation. No one knows until faced with it.

Perhaps we are looking at different comparisions. She could have stayed home, like many her age, and partied at raves or blocked traffic at a peace protest.

Instead she, at great personal risk, volunteered to serve her country and travel to Iraq to protect me and my family. And she suffered terribly because she chose the honorable thing to do. Yes, she was just doing her job. But to me she and all the troops over there are heroes.

Worth repeating!

I think every partriot who wants to serve is good for the country... and I think anyone who cuts them down and calls their triumphs 'bogus' is not. Consider that.

Your attitude stinks. Have some respect towards others with differing opinions. That kind of attack against me is unwarranted.

I happen to think women in combat is against the best interests of the United STates of America, and against the best interests of our brave fighting men on the front lines and elsewhere.

So in my opinion, its people like YOU that pose a danger to our troops, because you support the hare-brained idea of women in the military, whose very presence pose a danger to our troops, and who have caused nothing but trouble in the military academies.

Women have been nothing but trouble trouble trouble for our military.

Nobody even knows what really happened,

So because of that she shouldn't be believed. I could care less about any political overtones or how it affects anybody's agenda. Her story is an individual story.

I am getting the hint that some think her story should be pooh-poohed or slapped down regardless of what it is because it upsets an agenda. Her story is judged on its overall political effect.

Sorry, not going down that Democratic path. Her story is what it is.

huh? What did this girl do that you are making her out to be Miss Heroine 2003?

She was driving a truck. She got lost. She was taken prisoner.

I'm glad she's back, but I'm not going to worship her when I don't even believe in women in the military.

Got it? Can you understand and appreciate that everyone doesn't have to agree with you?

Are you that intolerant and bigoted?

Women have been nothing but trouble trouble trouble for our military.

Why don't you take your opposition to women in combat roles to a thread about the politics of that issue instead of a thread about this individual soldier. Its unbecoming.

I'm sure that entire unit fought like tigers - some even to their deaths.

Why would you believe that and then not believe that she fought also? There is nothing in this report that would sound "fishy" unless you just can't buy a "girl" doing it.
