Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

On a local talk radio show here in Philly (1210 AM) Dave Christian said today that Jessica Lynch's arms and a leg were broken as part of her torture. Christian said he couldn't go into any further details, but he said that she was tortured extensively. He also said that the torture was probably intensified BECAUSE she is an Anglo female.

She's probably still alive because she's a female. The Iraqis probably shot the men dead and kept her around to demean. That's probably why she still has her life.

A USMC major general met up with early retirement for expressing doubts about their abilities. Poetic justice -- he complained about their presence in what we considered REMF country and was ordered to publicly apologize before he took up fishing as a hobby.

And of course the Marines no nothing of what it takes to get thing done< /s>.

You are speaking in generalities, not specifics. There are more kick ass gung ho guys by a wide margin. But then there is Phil Donahue.

Some white men can jump, some chinese people can drive well, and some women can kick ass in battle.

You have made a false assumption--I'm a female. Like I said, I am very glad that she fought back. But why does that make her a heroine? She only did what anyone would do, knowing the reputation of the Iraqis for how they treat POWs.

Yeah, really it does. One does not know what they will do in combat, especially when being overrun. Some people might have tried a futile attempt to run away, some might have surrendered, some might have covered their face and laid down in the dirt, essentially trying to save their own lives and not draw attention or fire to themselves. The choice she made was not only an attempt to save her own life but the only choice that might have had a positive impact on the survival of the unit as a whole or the guy next to her. By fighting back she drew fire and attention to herself instead of her fellow soldiers. That was what she had been trained to do and that was the choice she made. So in my mind you can't ask for more.

From what we read here, the only solid source for PFC. Lynch's heroics is PFC. Lynch.

It's a nice story about a young lady who was probably raped and definitely tortured by her captors. I have no doubt that this Audie Murphy performance is exactly how she remembers the ambush. But this is a woman who hasn't eaten in 8 days and has suffered terrible physical abuse and likely suffers survivor guilt-- why is she alive and all of her comrades dead?

Maybe she did try to "fight to the death", more likely she didn't-- I'm not sure how well Army basic training prepares its future supply clerks and cooks for ambushes.

BTW,read the posts many of these people think women should be in combat. And the first post on this thread was pro that position.

Are you talking about this thread? The first comment I saw after the excerpt was "proud to be an American". And I didn't see anyone advocating women in combat, either.

As I recall women would not have been in this position pre-Clinton.

Considering we had female POW's in GW I, I'd say you are wrong.

I have read She Went to War, The Rhonda Cornum Story, about the woman POW in Gulf War I.

"Courage Under Fire" wasn't even loosely based on Cornum's story. I'll look around online for a good description without spoilers. Denzel Washington made the movie worth watching.

And if you reread my post, my comments were nothing personal against this young woman at all. IMHO she has no business anywhere near a combat zone. And fella, that is just as valid an opinion as YOURS.

I'm a female, as I've said before. And I could shoot straighter than most boys before I was 10 years old. But the fact that women can shoot or fight is not the issue.
