Announcement Regarding the Breaking News Posting Category
Free Republic
| March 18, 2003

Posted on 03/18/2003 6:51:02 PM PST by Jim Robinson
To All Posters of Articles, News, and Announcements, etc:
For the duration of the war on Iraq, we would like to reserve the "Breaking News" category for news items that are pertaining to truly breaking news stories. Please post other news stories to Front Page, Editorial, Extended, or News categories as appropriate.
For the time being, please post announcements or news of rallies, chapter events, radio shows, TV shows and other items that are normally allowed in breaking news to Activism, Announcements, Free Republic, News, State categories, etc., as appropriate.
Please try to keep vanity posts or personal posts to a minimum or post them to the appropriate topics in the General Interest forum.
(notice that I did not post this announcement in breaking news)
Thanks very much for your continued support in this effort to keep our news forum focused on the news and for making Free Republic the premier conservative news forum on the planet.
Jim

I remember when I first signed up (June 2001), I tried to post an article that day or a day or two later. It wouldn't let me and I got a message to the effect of "wait a little bit of time when you become more familiar with FR". I could post comments immediately, but not an article.
Just fyi, my friend. :O) . . .

I, for one, greatly appreciate this regulation. I don't always have time to read everything... including scrolling through titles, especially multiple repeat titles... but, I consider it an absolute priority to daily check in at FR for updates. That is going to be even more true during this war. Darting in to check out updates on breaking news is without a doubt going to be not only a necessity to many of us, but a god-send!! I just don't have time and I appreciate so very much the info FR provides. I imagine info is going to be overwhelming soon. BTW, this doesn't make the other info less pertinent and it is good to know where to find it.

Thanks for the ping, Meek. We're all on the proverbial pins and needles right now, but we'll hang on.
I remember being here on 9/ll. The threads from that day are a fascinating running commentary. The Iraq war, when so many of us have relatives in the armed services, is going to generate a lot of threads and we can't let FR get swamped.

So this explains why my Elizabeth Smart thread was pulled from breaking earlier today. I'd LOVE to see a separate forum for "true crime" threads (i.e., the van Dam, E. Smart & Laci Peterson cases).
I avoid such threads at all cost, and I bet a lot of Freepers do too.
What say you, Mr. Robinson?

From js1138:
"There was a "waiting period" when I first signed up...
Their reason was that it affected too many legitimate posters.
I feel that even a few hours would help limit the disruptors. "
Bumpity bump for a good idea-

The breaking news catagory has had problems. Hopefully this will clear things up.
