Yes, Natalie, there is a reason
Oregon Magazine ^ | March 18, 2003 | Larry Leonard

Natalie Marmion (ABC affiliate KATU-TV, Portland, Oregon on March 17, 2003): “The announcement that war is close sent the stock market soaring.”

Wrong, Miss Information. The President announced that if certain conditions are not met by his chosen deadline, March 19, 2003, his coalition of the willing, whether it includes the troops of two nations or many, will enter Iraq, and shortly close the book on the regime of dictator Saddam Hussein. That is why the stock market soared. What, you ask, is the difference between what you said and what I just said? A grasp of the situation is the difference.

This business of grasping a situation requires a little research. You don't just repeat the feeds from the network if good journalism is your goal. Take your report about the NW girl who was run over by the Israeli bulldozer, for example. She was, according to a source close to the events, burning the American flag in a Palestinian demonstration two weeks ago, and at the time of her death was trying to block the dozer from destroying a home that was a conduit for terrorist smugglers. What did they smuggle? Body explosives into Israel so Arab children could detonate themselves in public places, intentionally slaughtering civilians. Odd that you didn't mention that part. Was it because you haven't spent a single minute looking into the story?

This stock market item, now, while not so dramatic, represents bad reporting, as well. No, Natalie, it is not the proximity of war that made stocks soar. It is the elimination of one category of doubt....(snip)

No doubt about it. The market HATES uncertainty . . .

Think really hard about what I say next, Natalie.  Every journalist you know, every historian you know and most of both types you don't personally know have said the following:  World War II brought America out of the Great Depression.  (Photo: Adolf Hitler)

Peter Jennings should be chased back to eastern Canada where his other brothers are.

You attribute the stock gains to war. I attribute the stock gains to the end of indecision.

With decision made, let’s get it done

Great article. Thanks for the Ping.
They always go at their stories with a pre-conceived idea and then proof it by interviewing those that confirm their ideas.
Some circular thinking here and rarely close to the truth.

"You don't just repeat the feeds from the network if good journalism is your goal."

Either that statement was meant with an incredible sarcasm, or, was made with an equally incredible amount of nievete'.

"Journalism" is not what it's "all about" anymore; hence, the idea one would be seeking "honor," or "pride" et al visa vi "good journalism" is absurd; in view of the evidence.
This harkens back to our discussion on "influence" my friend; because, "journalism" has always been the vehicle used for whatever ends suit the urinalists be it past, present, or future.

In any event, this recent stock market "surge" is so reminiscent of how the DOW reacted to the '94 congressional takerover, by Newt&Co.

Of course you remember that, huh.
How Clintigula was to be "assigned" all the credit by this very same ABC & their mediot alphabet soup pals?

Fact is?
The "truth" is what they say the "truth" will be; &, there's only one way that'll ever be stopped.
I for one -- to date -- haven't seen such an effort being made by, We The People, either.

Until such a time comes then, the rules remain the same.

...the mediots have the last word.

"...cirular thinking."

That's exactly what it is, come to think of it! Reminds me of Conan pushing the threshing wheel round and round, all day every day, walking miles and miles and going nowhere! Poor Natalie.
