San Antonio DJ Pulls The Plug On The Dixie Chicks

A popular country music group has some San Antonians turning off their radios. A KJ 97 DJ pulled the plug on the trio's songs after lead singer Natalie Maines made a negative comment about President Bush.

The trio is on tour overseas, but they're causing quite a stir back here at home.

"Natalie Maines before a concert audience in London, England said, and I quote, ‘Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas,’" said Keith Montgomery with KJ 97.

The comments prompted Montgomery to pull the Chicks music off the air Thursday

"I would say the reaction is 99 percent in favor of what I have done," said Montgomery.

Texans aren't the only ones upset about Maine's comments. Reaction from all over the country caused the group on Thursday to post an explanation of their stance. The group released a statement Thursday saying they have been overseas for several weeks and "the anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."

In a separate statement Thursday, Maines said, "I feel the president is ignoring the opinion of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

But in the process of putting their opinion out there, they're losing support. Angry phone calls flooded radio stations across the country Thursday, calling for a boycott of the Texas trio's music.

The Dixie Chicks will kick off a U.S. tour in support of their multi-platinum album "Home" on May 1 in Greenville, South Carolina. The group's hits include "Wide Open Spaces," "Ready to Run" and "Landslide." The Dixie Chicks are coming to San Antonio in July.

Montgomery says, after hearing from more listeners, he'll decide on Friday whether to play their music on his show.

Proof that Fatalie shoots her mouth off before she thinks (not saying i don't do the same from time to time).

But this is truly dumb cuz wouldn't this be the peak time for their CD sales, being they just won the big Grammy and all?

I for one, have no intention of attending.

Could be a good opportunity for a FReep.

WTCR-FM Email Regarding Dixie Chicks - Clear Channel is NOT Getting Involved.

Whatever's going on in San Antonio, it must be a gimmick. My CC country station is taking no position at all and keeping the Chunks on the air as long as CC playlists say to do so.

I'm sooooo dissapointed! I also liked them a lot in the beginning with their previous singer. I would see them play at places like Borders Books and Music. In fact I have an autographed CD of their's before they got big.

I was surprised when they got a new singer but I still liked their music. Now I'm soooo upset that I can't enjoy it anymore!

I really wish entertainers would just shut the *bleep* up so I can still go to movies and listen to the radio!! =(

They dropped the other lead singer before, so they can drop Maines too.

One can only imagine the reception they will receive in San Antonio. I would venture a 'guess' would be low attendance, and lots of boo-ing. I for one, have no intention of attending.

I thought about going to their concert in Little Rock on August 1, just to boo them through the entire concert. To sit in the same seats I paid 30 bucks for to see Toby Keith, I would have to pay 65 bucks for Sadam's Spice Girls. No thanks. They won't get MY money. I may just break out the dog poop catapult and do a little target practice on their limos though.

Very inefficient, yes. However, Les Paul IIRC only uses downstrokes.

Well, well. Looks like somebody's feeling the heat. Here's a new statement from Natalie (from their web site):

As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect. We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as a result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers' lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American.

Good idea. Who says we can't FREEP the Dixie Chunks' concerts? It won't cost a thin dime outside of markers and poster board. And it would be a barrel of laughs to boot. SD

I'm ALL for it. We should get wood chippers so people can come by and drop in the cds they already own.

Those little canvas backs have truly "sht in their mess kits", and are toast with not only the NASCAR fans, but most real Americans.

They should go to NYC or SF now, and see how they do.

They are done!

My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

If I were a promoter I would book Pro American Troop concerts in the same towns and on the same dates as the Dixie Chicks concerts. I would ask True AMERICANS to attend my Pro America Concerts and boycott the Dixie Chicks pro Sadam Concerts. That should get tons of free Radio, TV, and Newspaper coverage of the pro America Concerts. That would make it unpatriotic to attend a Dixie Chick Concert.

The promoter of the pro America Conserts should donate net proceeds to the families of American Military Personal who suffer causualites in the Gulf.

That would end the Dixie Chick's career.

People should call the sponsors heard on any station that is still airing Dixie Chick music and tell them you will no longer buy from them if they continue to advertise on a station that plays Dixie Chick music.

If any stations are stupid enough to still play Dixie chick music, the cancellation of a sponsor or two will get the Dixie Dhick records removed from the play list.
